I am not inclined to be particularly hardworking. In fact, I'm kind of a slacker.

I am an incredible writer.

I spend most of the day daydreaming about girls and planning how to succeed with my current romantic pursuits.

Most of my evening leisure time, and I value it tremendously, is spent going out with girls I'm dating or trying to meet new girls with my buddies. I also enjoy spending time with my parents and extended family.

I grew up and live in New York. I don't want a fancy car or a Park Avenue palace, but I would like a decent apartment and to be able to go out (to restaurants and bars) as much as I want. In a perfect world, I would go out to eat 3-4 nights a week and cook the rest.

I'd also like to be able to take one "overseas" vacation a year and a bunch of smaller weekend road trips.

I also place tremendous importance on taking care of myself. I either go to the gym or run every single day. I also go for a swim and sauna several times a week.

Please advise what someone with my tastes and priorities should pursue. TYIA. Serious responses sincerely appreciated.

In any event, I will try to find something representative of my writing ability. Once I do, I'll post it.

Apply to every funded PhD program you are remotely qualified for at every school in NYC. Academia in social sciences or humanities is normally a mug's game, but since you won't be going into it expecting to become a professor, you'll be fine. Since you don't really care about impressing your profs, put in the minimum amount of work. You will have a large amount of free time. Drag out writing your dissertation for the maximum amount of time. Get funding to travel. Do your freelance writing on the side. This could last you for a good eight years or so. Get the degree (or not, you could also bail with an MA, if you like,) and get a job at some community college or at a private high school.

This is not really a great career trajectory IMO. You waste your productive years. You will probably never be able to afford a family in NYC. But I think it does mostly allow you to have the lifestyle you want.

Could you elaborate on your last point? I'm very interested because I'm not really familiar with the concept of "productive" years. I'm 22 years old now and am under the impression that the pressure to be productive will only increase as I get older.

The thing is, I do want a family in New York...eventually. That's precisely why I want to live out this dream while I still can. I know my philosophy may seem a little counterintuitive, but I know myself and know this is what I want to do first.

I also don't think doing so would disqualify me from raising a family in New York in the future. I'm not at all independently wealthy but I think I could make it happen. I may not send my kids off to private school or have money in the bank for college, but I don't agree with the notion that a select few careers (namely the type that take years of positioning/education to achieve) are the sole way to provide for a family in New York. Thoughts?

Normally, 25-35 would be your years of establishing yourself in your field. By your mid-30s you've hopefully reached a point of relative stability and responsibility. In most careers worth having you can't start this process in your mid-30s after years of dicking around. "Productive years" perhaps implies that the years that follow aren't productive. "Determinative years" might be better. I don't think this is a problem for you as you don't seem that ambitious. It would be a problem for some people.

Maybe a bit of hyperbole regarding family. If your wife has a decent job it's obviously not impossible for an NYC teacher to have kids. I wouldn't enjoy that situation. Again, you won't have the nest egg that people typically build up before settling down, assuming you plan on getting married soon after finishing your years of laziness.

It's not to say you're fucked for advancement everywhere. Teaching, for example - you could get your first teaching job at 35 and with a PhD I see no reason why you wouldn't eventually become a school principal if that's what you wanted and you were good at your job. You're just more limited in terms of the fields you can enter.

You don't make six figures until you've been in the system a long time.

Sure, eventually. In this guy's case, when he's 45 or 50. What's your point?

That's definitely enough to raise a family, especially if you know that retirement is something you don't have to save for.

I already admitted that it was. Still won't be comfortable for a long time, especially when he's 35 and making 42k with no savings.

I'd rather teach high school history or media studies at a local CUNY.

This is also "supplemental income" unless you have a tenure position.

There's no such thing as a real "career" for someone who doesn't want to work hard, especially in New York.

The closest thing I could think of would be some kind of government work. You will work with frustrated people in a depressing office, but you'll "leave it behind" at the end of the day. You'll be able to afford a modest place in Queens or Yonkers or something and you'll have stability, short hours and vacation.

Oh, the one other thing that comes to mind is writing/editing for trade magazines or in-house corporate publications - tends to be really boring and unsexy but pays way more than other writing/journalism type jobs. Probably would help if you have a little web-programming ability.

if you want to be a writer, you should live the life of a starving artist. move to staten island and live in someone's attic. find a job cleaning offices or operating a movie projector at night.
