It's different for my court, because we have good law schools and TTTs in our district. I know all the clerks for the magistrates in my court, and most of them are top students from the local TTTs. Some Harvard/Stanford clerks also, but I get the sense that they had crappy grades. No idea how magistrates hire if there aren't nearby law schools.
I don't know anyone who went from a magistrate clerkship to a D Ct. clerkship. I'm sure it happens, but that's not as common as going from D Ct. to COA. |

The interview still will be mostly about fit at this point. The only thing that could really hurt you is if a clerk tells the judge that your grades suck (most judges don't have a very good idea about grades and class rank, so they rely on clerks).
See if your school keeps a feedback book from other students who have interviewed with judges. This can be very helpful - they tell you what sorts of things judges ask about. Some interviews are very informal and you just talk about your background, hobbies, etc. Others are very substantive and they will quiz you about specific topics. Best to know what you're walking into. Also make sure you know every line of your resume and the obvious questions (why did you take that job, what did you learn from it, why did you leave). Easy stuff, but we had a clerkship candidate who didn't seem to know his own resume. |

I have my list of judges ready--mostly District Courts in regions where my school has pull and Magistrates in TTT districts all over the place.
Edit--Also, I was no offered by my summer firm for "economic reasons." I'm getting at least one LOR from a partner at the firm, possibly the hiring partner, and I've been told repeatedly that my no-offer wasn't performance-related (in fact, my whole class got no-offered. . . I know).

I just talked to the other two guys on Thursday, and both got the same speech that I got, and neither got offers. The weird thing is that the firm left it sort of open-ended with all of us. I guess I'm not ruling out the possibility that the firm could go back and make an offer to one of the other guys (especially the guy who was an URM--the firm was lily-white). I don't think that would happen within the next three weeks or so, though.
I'll just say that none of us got offers, and we were told that it was for financial reasons. |

And yes, Magistrates will care just as much as d ct. judges. There is this weird myth that magistrates will take any random hobo who applies for a clerkship. Their standards are much higher than the xoxo wisdom. |
