After I started BIGLAW, my mom was calling me at least once a week, asking me how I was, how the job was. Oh, and one of the first calls, she asked me for money.
After I lost my job, she stopped calling me. I still call about once a month to say hi and ask about the family, but she never calls me anymore. Oh, and I once asked her if she could loan me some money when I was going through a rough patch after I first got shitcanned. It was for an amount less than what I gave her before, but she said no.
I know people act like this, but to get this from my parents has been very disappointing

My mom used to beat me in elementary school for a variety of transgressions, including spilled milk and getting an A (as opposed to an A plus).
She would tell me to walk outside, and pick out a stick she would beat me with. If I picked out a little one, she'd hit me till I bled. If I picked up a big one, it would take less hits to produce the same effect.
Once I smarted up and dragged home a really heavy one she couldn't pick up. She took a knife, cut a piece off, and beat the shit out of me with it.

Yea man, they did pay for my college. Hence why I feel too guilty to turn them down when they ask for shit.
I mean, they have been good parents at time and absolutely horrible at other times.
I remember another time when I accidentally tracked mud into the house after playing outside as a kid, and my mom slapped me so hard I started bleeding. But then later she hugged me and apologized. So it was a confusing childhood to say the least.
But I mean, I don't complain too much cause they raised me, provided for my needs, and sent me to college. But I don't think I'm that out of line for not being too fond of them these days

I have to give mine credit for finding out about my advanced HS program and urging me to apply for it, finding out about the full ride college scholarship program that paid my way for 4 years and urging me to apply for it, and counseling me to avoid graduate school until I had real job experience and connections.
Even in those days, all too many people just did stuff like masters degrees or LS to avoid facing the job market after they graduated, and it often harmed their employment prospects.
At their age now, asking them for grad school money isn't an option for me at all and that has made me very hard-nosed when it comes to dealing with any grad program. I'm still afraid of going through with it - I have a decent job now without the degree, and what if I happen to change fields? It's this sense of caution that my parents have imparted to me.

i can empathize with the OP. My dad was downsized out of a middle-management job when I was a kid and was never able to restart his career. He was the first person in our entire extended family to go to college, by the way. He took out his loss on us at home (verbally, physically, emotionally). Didn't give any kind of guidance on college and career choices. Barely talked to me at all, actually, except to yell at me. Completely unsupportive when I joined the military and when I went to law school. Now, I'm doing pretty well in my career and I can't talk to him or my mom about it because they get angry. They'd rather talk about my brothers' jobs as retail store managers. My brothers don't want to hear it, either. Nor my grandparents, etc. It's OK though - my wife's family is the polar opposite. They love having a lawyer in the family and they treat me like royalty.
I think it's made me a stronger person for having to deal with my parents, though. I am certainly a lot more aware of class differences than most people. I'm one of those "straddlers" between worlds.

Dood, you and me have kind of similar stories.
Like I said, my early childhood was ok, besides my mom constantly beating on me for stupid shit. But my old man was a pretty nice dood.
We were solid middle class. My dad was an engineer, my mom a stay at home wife, and I only had one other sibling so money was not tight.
When I was about age 10, my old man's career really took off, he was making 300k/ year, and we were really striving it up. New house, nicer cars, etc.
That only lasted a couple of years until my old man got shitcanned. His next salary was about 1/5 of that, and he NEVER made that kind of money again. not even close. Ever since that experience, he's become a horrible bitter human being. He treats my mom like shit, and he has no friends.
Of course, I do appreciate that experience. I saw how people treat you when you no longer have money, and I learned it really sucks to live a certain lifestyle and have that taken away from you. It's better never to have lived that way at all.
