We're either very low-end candidates, or have gross flaws that one firm somehow missed in the 20 minutes, so we're more likely to be part of that 25-50% (hopefully that will be at least partially balanced by our ability to show a clear interest and commitment to that firm). Those people with fewer callbacks may have a lesser chance on a strictly numerical basis, but that's not what the callback is about - it's not about gaming the numbers, it's about fit. But at the end of the day, we're all unhappy about our situation and didn't get what we wanted. And that sucks. (And also, my whole point is that I'm ultimately not going to get biglaw anyway despite all this because of my stupid callbacks, so the end result is that I'm actually in a worse position because I'm wasting so much time doing these dumb things for no good outcome).
I think interviewers want somebody who is more polished. Who wants biglaw for better reasons than I do (I don't have any good reasons...I just want the paycheck/exit opporunities). Etc. |

Obviously if a partner hated your guts or wants to ding you on grades alone or something you're finished. But if it really is down to fit, I have heard from very reliable sources that partners *generally* really do give a fair bit of deference to associates - because once the partner thinks that you are willing and capable of doing the work and don't seem like a horrible douche (ie, grades are there, you seem professional, etc.) that's the extent of what the care about personally. They are usually smart enough to realize that they won't be the ones directly working with you for 13 hours every day - the other associates will be. And as partners they don't want to have to deal with associates hating each other because it makes their lives more miserable and they are already miserable enough.
So yeah - having two associates who actually spent an hour or two with you at lunch going to bat and saying "this guy/girl seems pretty chill, I wouldn't mind a beer (or an all-nighter) with them" can actually have a lot of traction and save you from potentially getting dinged by the partner who says "yeah they looked fine on paper and I can't point out anything really wrong with them but they seemed kind of dull/I'm not convinced that they really fit in here." Similarly if it's neck and neck between two equally qualified and equally personable candidates, who will the lunch associates - the tie-breakers - go to bat for: the one they didn't meet at all, or the one they had a nice lunch with? Who do you think will get that offer?
And those are the kinds of decisions that make the difference between out on the street and 180k/yr ITE. Never, ever forget that. Go on every lunch you possibly can and try to make it the most enjoyable lunch you can for the associates without groveling or brown-nosing. |

One partner tried to "expose" me for bullshitting after I expressed my interest in a field he focuses on (it wasn't intentional. I didnt even check my interviewer profiles before heading into my callbacks). My explanation pretty much silenced him,and im pretty sure got me the offer i wanted. |

Act like you have other offers to choose from, even if you don't have any. I swear my interviewers orgasmed when I told them I had other options (and even named those firms), but then said why I still didn't cancel my CB at that firm, and why I'm so interested in them.

I'm not going to act like I knew this would happen, though. I had many sleepless nights before and during OCI, worrying about whether I'd even get a chance to do a single callback. I'm shocked as it is, and it pretty much created the belief that firms really will take a "winning personality" if the grades are a little below their cut-offs.
I also dont believe firms raised their cut-offs that much. |

i emailed the person whom i clicked with the most (NOT recruiting coordinator). made sure it was a partner and someone who responded to one of my post-CB thank you notes. i wrote that after visiting other firms, i thought theirs was the best fit and would love the chance to join that firm (all true). then asked if he/she knew where the committee was in its hiring decisions. email was sent two weeks after CB.
didn't get a response, and it was in fact a different partner who gave me a call today. may not have even made a difference but who knows, i'm just so relieved right now. |
