- For the large number of people who will get only a bachelor's degree, UG prestige matters

- For people who get an MBA, UG prestige matters in the sense your WE will be better if you go to a strong UG or a strong UG program

- I would imagine UG prestige matters somewhat when it comes to PhD programs, I am not sure though

- EDIT - UG prestige may matter in the elusive "real world prestige" or "lay prestige" category. This is hotly debated

EDIT - The overall point I'm trying to make is that xoxo says "UG prestige doesn't matter." That's frankly not the case for a large subsets of applicants.

EDIT - Also, I am not saying Ivy or bust. Most of the UVA kids I know have a ton of pride in the school, and I would say they benefit from the UG prestige of UVA. Don't misunderstand what I am saying here.

"for law school and law careers, what is said here has a lot of truth to it"

Even for that, not really. For me, it's been a noticeable help to have gone to a good UG in all kinds of areas related to law and life in general. If I hadn't gone to HUG, never would have gotten the post-UG WE I did, almost certainly wouldn't have gotten into HLS, probably wouldn't have been able to work where I did after 1L, wouldn't have connections to people from UG that are becoming even more useful as all of our careers advance, etc. You can say it doesn't matter, but the truth is, you don't know where you'd be with it if you didn't have it, or without it, if you did.

I can't say it's the right thing for all people in all situations. I can say that for me and most of the people I know who had the option, going to HYPS was the right call. Most people who go to college have no idea what they're going to do, and even the ones who are sure they want law are likely to change their minds. Even for the ones who end up in law, there are benefits.

For your law career, obviously LR at a T6 is more impactful. However, for others' careers and career options, UG can be very impactful.

Also, top UGs tend to cost less with financial aid, and top public UGs tend to give merit aid (or are cheap if you are in state).

To be fair,

Dear Antmatic,

You and I both take a lot of shit on this board (albeit usually from very different contingents), but I feel as though there is generally a sort of mutual respect between us. We actually agree on a lot of issues even though our fundamental political ideologies are very different, and I think you add something to the board (I assume that you would say the same about me.) We are, in a word, FRIENDS.

With that said, as a FRIEND I feel compelled to tell you that regardless of the merits of your argument here, I think an unsolicited 'reminder' from a black male Yalie/rabid pro-AA troll that "Undergraduate pedigree is still extremely important" inarguably makes you look like a smug, self-serving/satisfied douchetastic fucking faggot. Just sayin'.

Sincerely,

TBF

Hah, I am aware of this. The fact that the likes of BEEF SUPREME pushed me back a bit made me realize this seems to make people think less of me.

- Not unsolicited, this came up in the "Cornell" thread. My overall point is that UG matters for a whole hell of a lot of people, not just HYP students. Whether they are Cornell students, Boston College, UVA, Michigan, Ole Miss, whatever, people take pride in their UG and their UG can be very beneficial to them.

I'm pretty sure a TTT accountant can do quite well and don't most big 4 partners have advanced accounting degrees?

outside of ibanking and consulting I can't think of much else

IDK. I think it is like most investments in that you get exactly what you put in it, a realistic return, and not a cent more. And to get in a good UG, you had to put in four years of hard work in high-school, and my estimate is that you'll get about four years of prestige-boost out of it.

On the flip side, that means that if you're smart and have a good work ethic, you're never more than four years from the top.
