Performance review pwned and laid off recently. IP lit. Hated the partners and working on IP lit. Not saying the firm name, and I don't even know the Vault range.

Good questions. A partner called me in to talk, and when I went to his office he had another more senior partner on the phone. The junior partner explained what was going on, and then the senior dude started talking. Basically he said that my performance sucked and then listed various things I supposedly did wrong. For example, there were some documents that we got after the close of discovery which we didn't actually need to prove our case but which we didn't get into a supplemental expert report, and this pissed a partner off. And there was a time I was unavailable for a weekend. Etc.

Anyway, once I got the hint I told the partner a piece of my mind regarding my perceptions of his case, which he lost and which I knew all along was a lost cause. Then the junior partner said that some "employment action" was coming and I was asked what I wanted. I then requested to be laid off.

I have some time to find another job.

Probably a lot like all kinds of other Federal lit. hmm, what the fuck did I do at this job:

doc review/supervise doc review for production/privilege (all completely worthless docs, by the way)

write responses to discovery requests

on a really good day, study some prior art and compare with the patent

review docs produced by opponent

claim charts, claim charts, claim charts...edit these endlessly

write expert report shit, occasionally meet with expert to get his seal of approval on shit

write bullshit motions or responses (always trivial issues)

I'm sure there's some other crap too. Other people might like it, but I really didn't--it all just seemed so trivial and pointless to me considering these cases typically come down to the definition of one word.

Not sure why you think I'm flame, but anyway I haven't done serious delving into non-law jobs yet. I will. No marketable skills really, but I do have a masters degree from MIT in engineering. Despite how it sounds, it is not marketable 7 years later.

you could probably teach at a TTT community college or something more - masters in engineering from MIT *sounds* impressive, and often that is enough to get one of these kinds of jobs (yes, I am serious). You could look for other work while doing this.

there is probably a way to make it marketable in the private sector again, although I will admit I don't know much about engineering and how much time you would have to spend volunteering/doing shit work to make this happen

why haven't you considered the non-law option more?

Yeah, I've thought about teaching. I'll definitely be looking into it--it sounds like a reasonable thing to do.

I have no idea how I'd get back into my area of engineering. It's kind of a small niche, and nobody wants to hire anyone without recent experience in the area. Volunteering would probably not be an option, and there is essentially no shit work to do that could get me in.

I haven't actually deeply considered anything because I haven't been forced to and because I'm discouraged about careers in general. I've just been biding my time until the axe fell, and now I will relax first and then get serious about what to do next.

well good luck to you, I know how it feels when you feel like you're on top of the world with a bright future ahead of you, and then it all comes crashing down

keep a positive attitude and don't let it affect your self-esteem - it's the economy, not you

Honestly, as far as law is concerned, it is me (and/or the nature of BIGLAW, depending on how you look at it). I'm ok with that. That doesn't mean I can't find something else more suited to me though--it'll just take some time, luck, and searching. ty
