Only people that are able to land an entry level position are people who already have an offer from a peer firm.

Then I proceeded to be humiliated by having a "goodbye" lunch with a couple of the Partners from my hallway. I think the biggest FUCK YOU had to have come when my partner mentor said,
"Well I'm sure this is probably the worst day of your life, but I just want you to know that it is nothing personal, it's just business."
fuckin' fag.
No seriously, the Partner was/is a homosexual. His partner does JAG or some shit. We all met him at a SA event. |

Unless I was on Law Review and top 10% of my class, nothing was certain.
The REALLY REALLY fucked up part of the entire thing was that across ALL the offices, they No-Offered 50% of the Summer Class.
Then the particular office that I was a SA with RESCINDED the only ACCEPTED offer for that office.
So at the end of the day, I was FUCKED whether I got an offer or not. |

One time partner called me on the phone when I didn't show up and I didn't pick up the phone. He texted me saying, "where the hell are you?" When I got back to the office two days later he ignored me and just acted like nothing happened.
I ran into him in the men's room and tried to apologize. He didn't even make eye contact when we were taking a piss. He just said, "well...yeah."
Summer Class of 2010, please go to work. You can't skip work and expect to get an offer. Summer Associate means pretending to be at work busy. And yes that entails physically being at work. You can't just not show up to work and when the partner calls tell him that you are working at home. Working at home will not get you an offer.

They said it shouldn't reflect "too much" on my talent / work product etc. I worked hard during the summer and people liked me, and they said as much on the phone, shifting responsibility for the decision onto firm management. I wasn't too surprised - the firm had been laying off associates for months - but it was a jolt to be deprived of all hope. The firm said they'd help w/ recommendations and shit for another job but I never contacted them and they never contacted me again. I don't know if it will be a "badge of shame" but it's certainly not an asset.
BTW I'm top 1/3 at a T25, was at a V50. |
