I want to do M&A/transactional and I'd love to position myself to network/make contacts in NYC private equity to possibly lateral into a fund as a midlevel.

Any anecdotes/thoughts are greatly appreciated. TYIA

all v10 are good. they all represent banks. it will depend on the type of work you happen to get as an associate, whether partners will go to bat for you, your finance aptitude, your interviewing skills etc.

you can't generalize about corp exit options. it's always really situation specific.

think about how many m&a lawyers try to lateral to finance each year. say there are 10 firms at simpson's level, and each take 100 summer associates/year (both liberal estimates). of those, 50 are doing lit, and probably 40 are doing non-m&a corporate. so that's 100 m&a lawyers per year. say that half of those are staying in law (in-house or firm) and a quarter are leaving law or going into gov't. so you've got 25 lawyers, each with widely different skill sets, experiences, and career goals. some are going to be angling for standard IB, others PE, others hedge funds. there are lots and lots of finance shops in the world (dont forget about people who move to asia, ME, europe)

the point is that it's not like you're going to be interviewing for a spot at morgan stanley against one cravath guy, one cleary guy, and one skadden guy, and the job will go to the guy w/ the highest vault ranking.

where do V10 laterals usually come in at IBs, PE, hedge funds, etc.? associate? vp?

if you've worked at a V10 for 3-4 years, lateraling to an associate position at any of these is going to come with a big paycut, isn't it? it's not like you're taking the paycut to go to a lifestyle firm if you're going to a hedge fund. is it for the nature of the work (i.e., really wanted to work at a hedge fund all along) or are V10 associates coming in more at the vp level?

STB is tcr firm for PE - they are the go-to guys for the biggest players, and are almost always #1 on every PE league table. They do a lot of work for some big banks, especially JPMorgan, but you're right that sullcrom is probably tcr for big banks.

I don't think STB is any more overleveraged than its peer firms. There have been stealth layoffs, supposedly. But fratty? I definitely didn't get that and that isn't the rep it had at my school.

K&E seems to do a lot of midlevel pe (I.e., not in the same dollar amounts as stb, but definitely more frequently).

going buyside from a firm probably isn't gonna happen, bro. stb might be good if you want to try to go in-house at a pe fund or something

You do know that a lot of M&A is not PE-driven especially right now when the credit markets are still significantly constrained, right?

In any event, the top PE M&A (as opposed to fund work) firms are STB, K&E, Latham, Cleary, Ropes, Wachtell.
