Associates at the firm still aren’t fully occupied, according to Dell.

But that, he said, is due in part to the fact that the firm was judicious last year with its layoffs, holding on to more lawyers than it needed to service the recessionary level of demand for its services.

ouch. who knew lathaming half your associates was being "judicious?"

heard tell that a certain individual by the name of Mark A. Flagel, Tiffany's aficionado and recession-era popularizer of the phrase "There's no holding back!" is also associated with Latham and Watkins, can someone verify this information?

you are correct about Mark A. Flagel. he is partnered with Bob Dell at the law firm of Latham & Watkins LLP where the two laid off hundreds of associates and staff without cause or notice.

this was after Bob Dell promised that there'd be no layoffs.

Mark Flagel then flush with money announced to the world through the Los Angeles Times that he would not be holding back at upscale Beverly Hills shops such as Tiffany's.

"The firm has to look out for its interests. But those interests - while inter-related - can conflict. Maintaining the firm’s client service and revenue base is obviously critical. Expense control is important. But when shedding staff - management should speak with the hiring partner to learn about the impact of these steps on entry-level and lateral recruiting. A modest mis-step can tar a firm for a decade...the euros you save won’t be worth the effort in terms of recruiting damage."

"If you think about saving money, culling associates is really not the big game. It's the easy game," he said. Blase added that, under his scenario, a mere 3% savings requires a firm to lay off 10% of its associates.
