Went out after work today with a partner to meet some dood who he wanted to network with. First round, partner ordered a vodka tonic, dood ordered a dirty martini, and I got a long island. Second round, same, except that I got a G&T. Third, I got a G&T again, dood got a Stella, and partner hit up the waitress for another vodka tonic.
I know the G&T is always a legit drink order, but is the Long Island alright to start things off with? It looked kinda huge and juvenile when it came and I started to second guess my order. Advise.

No. Bookers is the most commonly available high-alcohol ALFA drink at the bar.

It is between 125-127 proof. Bottle I have is 126.9 proof. George Stagg bourbon is 140 proof. rare breed is 114 proof. Lots of bourbons are over 100.
Granddad 114 (which I just tried a few nights ago) is pretty ALFA too.
Sctoches are bottled at 65% alcohol, but some is lost so you don't see many over 115 or so.

Beer. Always a good choice.
After that, gin (gimlet), rye (Manhattan), bourbon (old-fashioned,) scotch are all fine. No vodka.
Dry martini is fine. Don't be lame and ask for it extra dry.

Maker's Mark on the rocks.
n.b., every bar switches grey goose with the cheap stuff and nobody seems 2 notice.

Assuming OP is a dood, and not a girl-
You want brown liquor (scotch, bourbon, if you're in a pinch irish whiskey (e.g., Bushmills, Jamison)). But a single malt scotch or small batch bourbon is really want you want. Always in good taste, very manly (drink it neat, or else with a DROP of water or one ice cube).
I would only mess around with cocktails if all the attys around you are men and they are all ordering them. MAYBE if you're at a bar famous for cocktails.
If you know your craft beer, you can go that route also, but don't order a PBR in a can.
EDIT: you could also do a high-end rum (e.g., small-batch anejo).

lit is a bitch drink even though it has a lot of different liquors. order a knob creek manhattan or a single malt like taliskar neat. of course, this is what i drink as a man.
but honestly just get what you want, even if it's vodka cran. most people don't give a shit so long as your drink is quick to make and not overwhelmingly embarrassing like a cosmo, up.

It depends on the occasion, but when I'm at work drinks I usually get a scotch on the rocks (MacAllan 12 or 18, depending on who's buying) or a G&T. If it's been a rough week I'll get a gin martini.
If it's a more casual occasion or a dinner, or I really don't feel like drinking much, bottled beer or wine is just fine.

Gross.
A chick who A.) drinks scotch, and B.) insists on Macallan?
You might want to think about what kind of signals you're sending there.

two follow-up thoughts:
if you are a male, you've got issues not least bec. of your drink order, but also, based on your gender bending comments above.
if you're a girl, your drink order is tacky, but shouldn't you be more concerned with "keeping up with the boys"? adhering to a "one less" policy will help keep your partner's ego and your reputation for propriety intact. if
I had to guess, you're a "dood," so flame away.

you can never go wrong with a vodka soda
no one can mess it up and it's appropriate anywhere from a dive bar to a fancy lounge or restaurant

1) Women drinking scotch is fine as long as you aren't with a bunch of other women who are all drinking Sauvignon Blanc. There's nothing wrong with Macallan other than it's kinda obv.
2) I love manhattans but I agree they get iffy for men sometimes. Always order them on the rocks and don't have more than two with the same group. Maker's works fine - anything higher end is wasted in a cocktail. If you don't know the difference between scotch, bourbon, and irish, don't get creative. Makers. On the rocks. Women can drink manhattans all night, up or rocks, till they're hearts' content.
3) I hope the poster above was not talking about vodka and diet coke. That drink is exclusively for 17 year olds on the bus. Don't do it. If you just wanna mask the booze get a greyhound/sea breeze/cape cod. If you want coke it's bicardi (white) or bourbon. All of those cocktails are exclusively for women except possibly cape cod (which men shall order as a vodka cranberry) and whiskey coke.
4) Long Island Iced Tea is a trashy drink for trashy people who are trashy. However, you will get away with it most of the time. Why? Most biglaw partners are trashy.

Personally, I think it's a close call. I would feel more comfortable ordering a rum and coke at a place with a modern feel, as opposed to a whiskey/cigar sorta joint. Rum and diet coke adds an extra dangerous layer of femininity.
Dark and Stormy has a silly name. If it's on the cocktail list, absolutely go for it. Even if it's not, I think it's OK, just have the ingredients in mind if the bartender gives you a funny look, which I guess would be any dark rum (Goslings Black Seal is ideal, but otherwise, almost every bar has Myers) and ginger ale.
What about whiskey and ginger ale? Bourbon and rye both go great. Some people do Jameson, which sounds good when you're ordering it, but personally I don't think goes with ginger ale as well. For bourbon, again, makers is a solid choice that every bar has.
When ordering this drink, I usually say to the server "do you have ginger ale?" and if they say "yes" I say "I'll have a makers and ginger ale." If they say no, order your rum and coke before things get awkward.
Bonus: Chicks love this drink and they don't know it. Order it and the girl with you will say "ooh that sounds good, I'll have one too." Then she will like it and like you and you will be popular and happy.
