B4 doesn't really give a shit about the MACC. It's not teaching you anything new really if you took undergrad accounting classes. It's just a cash cow and a way to meet the new 150 hours requirement. The extra 30 or so credits do not have to be in accounting or business courses. That said, a Masters in Tax is a real graduate program, which teaches you a ton of shit for B4 practice, at least in Tax.

Top MAcc places sent 80% of their class straight to big4 pre-ITE, most in audit some in tax. Most also have tax tracks where you can take almost anything you would in a masters in taxation.

oh i'm not disputing the fact (or certainly didn't meant it to come off that way) that macc programs don't send ppl to B4; that's downright foolish. But if you want B4, the best credential without a doubt is getting your cpa. For those w/out an ugrad accounting background, a macc would certainly be helpful. that, and sitting and passing the cpa.

big 4 is OK, but probably not going to get you HWS.

Family business could work if its legit. "Running" a regular 400K revenue small business isn't going to impress too many people. Starting your own might.

Most corporate experience is credited, albeit to varying degrees.

That being said, if you can tell an interesting story even better - hence NGO, TFA/PC, government, military, even family business experience is fine and sometimes even better than a run-of-the-mill corporate job. This is especially true of those who have taken a couple of years to start their own business or do something equally unique / challenging.

not really. Working at one of those companies does give you an 80% chance of pulling a top 10 B-school, but even a firm like deloitte can promise that (outside of the top 3, where their strat consultants enjoy a mere 25-35% acceptance rate).

It's only because folks from those firms generally have stellar pedigrees to start off with and would have been accepted into a top b-school irrespective of whether they worked at one of those particular firms or not.

They're also over-represented because there is an explicit expectation in both of those industries (management consulting and IB) that young kids will go back to b-school after 2-3 years of working. In fact, they're pretty much the only two occupations where an MBA is a 'must have'.

Will depend on a bunch of factors including ugrad and LS grades, ugrad and ls institutions, extra-curriculars, and also your GMAT score.

I suspect it would be hard to get into a top school with only 1 year of non-business experience if the other components of your application aren't top-notch. Still, worth a try if you're willing to settle for a T25 school rather than a T10.

It can be.

An MBA serves 2 primary functions:

- For those with a non-business background (e.g. science, engineering, law, etc) it is a credible path into the business world and a respectable corporate job (or business start-up if that's your thing)

- For those with previous business experience it is a (relatively) painless way of switching to another specialization (e.g. i-banking > marketing, finance > consulting, etc)

In either of these two cases there can be value in attending a T25 institution.

For those who are in business already and simply want to accelerate their progress in their particular area of expertise (whether it be i-banking, consulting, marketing, etc) then a top-tier (T10) school makes more sense and is really the only choice.

the main question is what u would want out of an MBA program. if u are eyeing the starting salaries then do not do it.

It's not so much about UG pedigree as the job you are able to get. TTTs (real ones, not state schools in top 100) place very poorly in desirable jobs. If a Old Dominion grad pulled MBB he'd have no problem getting into a top MBA, but its probably not happening.

It depends what your long-term career objectives are and why you're going to b-school.

If you want to be an auditor at Big4 you might be able to swing that in smaller office without an MBA with your current gpa and the fact that you're an accounting major. If you can manage to do this then I would pursue this option for a couple of years, get your CPA, make a little money, and then re-evaluate.

If you have loftier ambitions then by all means apply to b-school straight away but make sure you have a compelling and considered reason for being there. You don't seem like a conventional candidate but at the same time you've got a decent GMAT so that works in your favor - if you can write some good essays and get some strong recommendations you might have a chance at cracking T10.

You may also want to consider schools in the T25-T40 or so which have programs that are specifically aligned to your career objectives (whatever they may be) or which are well known in your geographic region.

My advice: decide why you want an MBA, do some more research, then apply to a mix of T1 and T2 schools focusing on those that are strong in the area(s) of business that you want to work in.

Like anything it probably also depends on the relative strength (read: name recognition) of the schools / programs you get accepted to.

I'd probably go the MBA route to keep my options open but if you're set on being in government then a MPx make sense. You could also go the dual MBA / MPx path but that would obviously be harder, more time consuming, and more expensive.

There are always subjects for stuff like that, not sure about dedicated programs / majors; it's worth noting that there are always government / not-for-profit / NGO types at b-schools (even though they are in the minority).

Also, would presume that an internship at NGO / UN / non-profit etc would be looked upon favorably (by the institution and prospective government employers).

I'd recommend googling re: best programs for non-corporate types. BusinessWeek.com is a pretty good resource for stuff like that.

Not unconventional in the sense of being out of left-field ... more so the family business thing, the paralegal(?) thing, and the going 'back to school' thing.

Basically, I just meant you're not in the (most common) ugrad + 2-4 years corporate experience category.

screw it, I'll just post it.

I went to college, and didn't graduate the first time around. I had to take a leave of absence for medical reasons in my last year. I came back to my ugrad and they told me I needed to petition some committee to basically honor my leave and let me make up the courses I didn't finish (my professors gave me incompletes). Without any explanation, this committee rejected my petition, so I was forced to go and complete these courses. Practically speaking, this denial meant that I now had to return to college, and that my incompletes, which turned into F's, would now stay as F's. So my gpa dropped from a 3.2 to 2.7. At my first college, I was a political science and philosophy major. I decided that I would take something more practical this time around, especially since I knew about ITE, and because I'm married.

I've been out of college for a while (7 years). The first 4 years were spent working as a paralegal, and thinking I might go to law school. I left my paralegal job to take care of the family business and have working in this position ever since. I've also started another small business. I have a year left to finish my accounting classes, get my bachelors and sit for the cpa exam. I have a 3.8 and am debating whether an MBA makes sense for me or maybe a Masters in Tax.

This is where I'm at now.

Your background is objectively weird. This will turn off a lot of decent MBA programs. More importantly, it will seriously turn off post-MBA employers.

On the other hand, accounting offers you two possibilities.

Option 1: you do the classes and take a B4/local firm job. This is a good career and they legitimately care about your degree (as opposed to MBA employers, who tend to care about HOW you got to B-school, rather than what you learned.)

Option 2: you ran a business for a while. If you did it right, you made shit tons of connections. Leverage these into basic accounting jobs. I know a good number of guys who keep 20-50 business on retainer at 200-500 a month just to read over the Cash flow statement and update the PnL once a month. Add in some personal taxes come april (at 1K a pop for Sole Ps and 1.5-3K for LLCs and C corp folks) and you've got a vacation home in florida in no time.

You basically need to figure out if you want to do the family business thing long-term or not.

If so, don't bother with the MBA. If not, would also suggest going down the accounting route first. There are solid career prospects at the large firms and you can leverage your experience there into other things long-term. If you're going to do an MBA do it before you're 30 though - this is especially true if you're married and/or have kids.

Eidlaw,

So your opinion on MACCs only applies to people with Accounting degrees already right? Would you say it's useful for people without UG Acct degrees who want to go into accounting?

I shouldn't have used the word scam in my initial post re MACCs. It' just that it's completely useless for someone who majored in accounting and has a cpa. Most if not allof these people get MACCs bc they need the 150 hours, and bc they think having a grad degree looks good. they're partly right but the b4 firms don't care for it that much, if at all. You're certainly not getting a pay bump for having a macc, generally speaking. But to answer your question, yes, if you don't have any undergad accounting degree, it is certainly helpful. And most likely, it'll help you land you a B4 job.

How much does school prestige matter for the Macc degree?

they don't mean a handful of non-connected 7-10 month stints. They mean 2 years at a good job + 2 years at a great job.

Are we talking about top programs?

Also, if we are talking about top programs, they are probably making a concession to politics folks. In any other profession <1 year means something went wrong.

If you are currently considering both nursing school and an MBA you should get a regular job and keep it for 2 full years then decide.

what are you doing now? Is there no way to extend this into a multi-year situation?

these two options imply you are grasping at straws and you need to experience real life.
