How much does prestige matter for an MSA? Is it a must that I attend a top program like Texas or USC, or can I just go to the local state U since it's cheaper

From what I've read, Big4 and the next tier recruit hard from top programs, but accounting hiring is also very regional, so smaller local programs might do fine in their home region. I don't know if recruiting is as formal out of lesser programs. You should maybe try contacting Big4 in your area to see if they recruit from the programs your interested in.

Some ideas that I haven't considered in a long time:

Degrees:

- mathematical finance (if you've taken real math classes)

- grad degree in education (though teachers have been getting screwed)

- something in accounting

- pharmacy

- physicians assistant or something like that

Keep in mind, nothing is truly "secure" ITE. Welcome to the new global economy.

Also, what do you think about an MPA/MPP if I want to do gov't work

man, i thought the JD was supposed to open doors? i wonder what kind of work you could get -- that meets your 9-5/50K requirements -- with an MBA that you can't get now.

granted, i don't really uderstand exactly what people get out of an MBA (unless they are at Harvard or whatever).

non-biglaw doesn't really pay at a rate to compensate an atty for the added stress of the profession versus other jobs.

worrying about fucking up a deadline or getting a discipline beef by some POS moron client isn't worth 50k a year.

makes sense. i just don't understand where all the lawyers end up working, since so few get BIGLAW. (yeah, i know "ITE" and all, but before ITE, where did they work if you are saying 50K isn't worth their while.) going to LS seems like insanity.

back before ITE and the consolidation of sophisticated law into mega firms, smaller firms (like 50-and-fewer firms) were capable of servicing larger clients.

and there were FAR fewer attorneys in the pool. so even if you did start out at a relatively shit wage, advancement was, even at small firms, a relatively stable thing.

it has been a commoditized profession in the past 10 years or so, and ITE has finally exposed it.

Subject: studying accounting is TCR

you probably can get CPA qualified (I mean qualified to take the exam) with about one more year of classes. Because you've got the undergrad -- hopefuilly you took a few business classes back then -- and some of your LS classes should count as well. Now you just have to take some advanced accounting and auditing. Use that year to job search and live off student loans. Go to an affordable program, lots of state schools have great accting programs.

Law and accounting are really similar in a lot of ways and the skills are complimentary. Accounting is an actually useful skill and there are all kinds of QOL/pay options, from some 9-5 bookkeeping thing to B4 jobs that are almost like Biglaw jobs.
