I did a HBS question thread back in july or so. classes don't start until next week, but i've been in boston for more than a week, hanging out with classmates, and figuring out where everything is. just got back from dinner and drinks and pretty exhausted but will take questions for about 30 minutes.

people are pretty accomplished and interesting though. i could definitely see myself making a lot of friends here. and boston is growing on me even though i'm a west coast guy.

i think they're both about 5 years.

from my understanding, there is some interaction. some of the Phd students are TA's for the second-year electives. and i think DBA accouting students who don't have MBA's have to take the first semester required MBA courses.

certain fields like private equity, banking, strategy, management, virtually require an MBA to get ahead. HBS also gets superstars who may not need an MBA but go to Harvard for the networking, brand name, and the experience.

If you're TRULY a superstar, an MBA is not required. You're confusing very good with superstar/phenomenal.

Then they aren't "legit superstars." A superstar wouldn't need or want to go back to SCHOOL to get more education if they're already pwning the fuck out of everyone (which is what superstars do). Your "legit superstar" friends are just very good, but not great.

Think these guys are going back for MBAs? Hmmm...

I don't give a fuck about where someone worked. What did they do while there, how much value did they add? If they're back in school for an MBA, they obviously weren't THAT good to the point of cruising straight to MD/Partner level (as a result of being THAT good and valuable to the company).

you don't care where they worked, and yet you posted profiles of guys at blackstone. lol.

also, those guys graduated college back in the 90's when PE firms did not require you to go to business school. that has changed now. i know for a fact that blackstone requires their pre-MBA analysts and associates to go to b-school.

Nothing is required if you're truly THAT good. Why would a firm care about you taking MBA classes if you're truly THAT FUCKING GOOD and make the company MILLIONS OR BILLIONS in profit? LOL C'mon man.

Pretty sure no PE, VC, or whatever firm would require a top producer to head back to school for a fucking graduate degree. Sorry.

Those guys might be superstars relative to their peers of the same age, but they aren't superstars in general (otherwise, they'd be enjoying their $5+ million bonus instead of taking an elective at HBS).

top PE firms require MBA's nowadays. can't speak for the way it was back in the 90's.

going to HBS is an amazing experience, one that you cannot duplicate with money. the network, prestige, etc., are all immensely valuable.

You're not explaining why an MBA is necessary if you're already generating huge profits for your company (which is what superstars do).

1. Why would your company want you to take 2 years off if you're such a superstar and top producer?

2. If you're such a superstar, why would you want to head back to school and miss out on 2 years of 7-8-9 figure income?

3. If you're a superstar, why aren't you already making 7-8 figures a year (superstars make 7-8-9 figures)?

if you're a superstar trader, yes, an MBA is not necessary. but for PE, banking, strategy, general management, and a number of other fields, an MBA from a top school teaches "soft" business skills that one cannot easily learn at work. and the pedigree and network are extremely valuable.

it's pretty clear that you don't know much about top b-schools or the type of people who go there.

As I said, it's not really necessary.

Is that the lawyer coming out in you? Pretty obnoxious anti b-school trolling. Granted if we're going off of your definition of superstar (Gates, Zuckerberg, etc) then yeah those guys are managing their businesses, and aren't worried about the MBA connections/prestige. Plenty of top, valued employees of PE and VC firms plus IB and MBB types go to HBS and return to their companies with no debt (firm paid for the MBA) and a promotion. That's becoming the standard actually.

That Citadel trader must not have been very good. He would have never have gone to get a MBA if he was making major bank. Unlike some other financial jobs, you don't need a MBA to get ahead in trading.

i only know a few harvard JD/MBA's. they're pretty impressive. one guy i met just graduated this year; he was a marshall scholar, spoke at Davos, launched a bunch of initiatives, internships at prestigious buyside firms.

every JD/MBA I talked to said their MBA experience and network were far more valuable than the JD part. And virtually all of them want to stay in business. I have no idea why they did a JD, but their interests lie in both areas, and they weren't quite sure what their career goals were, so they just did both.

Subject: vs. Stanford GSB

Did you consider the Stanford GSB (I think it has less than a 7% acceptance rate)? What do you and your classmates think of your counterparts on the West Coast? HBS and the Stanford GSB are widely considered the two best Business Schools in the Country (and U.S. News has ranked them that way for literally two decades now--exchanging the top spot every few years), and I think both boast greater than 75% yields (which is amazing), and just about split equally their cross-admits. In contrast, both Harvard and Stanford win virtually all of their cross-admit battles with Wharton. So, basically, when do you think someone should choose HBS and when do you think someone should choose the Stanford GSB (if they were to have that luxury)? I've met grads from each school, and virtually to a person, they were all exceedingly accomplished and impressive. Thoughts?

i applied to stanford, it was my first choice but got rejected after interview. i'm originally from the west coast and worked in L.A. before coming here. i really like stanford's culture, and since i want to go back to the west coast it made sense to go there. unfortunately, they did not want me. they're insanely selective but look for different types of applicants from HBS. the latter goes for your typical smart kid who did well in college and then worked for a "brand" name, whether it's an i-bank, hedge fund, PE, MBB consulting, general management, etc. Stanford loves going for non-traditional folks like those who did non-profit, started their own company, etc.

In general, if someone is fortunate enough to get into both, they should pick HBS if they want to go into any area of finance except venture capital, or they want to work abroad and want to use the harvard name to maximize their impact.

Stanford's small class seems like an advantage when it comes to on-campus recruiting with certain firms, especially given the fact that a good chunk of their students are going to non-profits or tech and aren't even considering jobs with Goldman, Bain, McK, and the like.

if you're at stanford and want MBB consulting or banking, you could easily get it. the disadvantage comes from the fact that a lot of east coast buyside shops don't formally recruit at stanford, but that's most likely due to the fact that it's so far away, rather than the quality of the school.
