has the country changed that much, or has the GOP changed drastically since then? i can't imagine a republican winning states like vermont, maine, massachusetts, rhode island, new york, illinois, california.

Reagan was the most transformational president in the post war years. If any anything he was far more radical than subsequent bush 1 and bush 2

LBJ was also a mean drunk who beat his wife and alienated Hoover (and pretty much everyone else) who had tons of dirt on him.

Politics isn't just about merit.

He also benefitted from a big demographic shift- a lot of "reagan republicans" were boomers who finally grew up, got real jobs, and started making real money. Their interests changed from no nukes to no taxes, and reagan was moderate enough on social issues to be palatable.

People used to vote based on the candidate. Now there is way too much partisanship, as well as a huge portion of people who look down on the other side.

Even if you were a democrat, you would consider voting for either guy. Now in many circles if you're a democrat and even think of voting for the republican candidate you'll be labeled a racist.

Reagan pretty much destroyed America, but look who he ran against - Jimmy "let's bend over and get fucked as a country" Carter.
