Date: October 17th, 2010 9:16 PM Author: razzle business firm Julia, I've always wanted to ask you a question about all of this stuff. I've been reading your exchanges in the Harvard Couple threads and see your posts re: female beauty and preferences.
We seem to have very different dating experiences even though I don't think we look all that different and by virtue of your tits you probably would be considered more attractive than me.
I date almost exclusively within the "white, 20something upper middle class" type and I'm a straight-nosed girl who has been described as "exotic" before (although I HATE HATE HATE being described that).
Never had problems nor did I feel like I was facing an uphill battle because I wasn't their type. Since I turned 18 I never felt that certain kinds of men would disfavor dark hair/olive skin or have a major preference for blondes/blue eyes. Blondes are more prevalent in certain places which may explain why some people interpret there being a preference. People have their own individual preferences but I don't get overwhelmingly more attention in Buenos Aires than I do in the Midwest (and I've visited both).
People are now exposed to a ton of different types of beautiful people, so your argument that you tend to prefer what you grew up with is garbage. I also know many white blondes who prefer darker, more exotic guys; white guys who prefer the female equivalent, and vice versa.

1)those who prefer what is familiarly beautiful. i would argue this comprises maye 60% of any human population.
2)those who prefer what is exotically or unusually beautiful/striking. i'd argue this comprises maybe 20% of any human pop.
3) those who appreciate beauty more democratically -- they like a very broad variety or 'types', 'looks", 'facial structures",etc. i'd argue this maybe another 20% of any pop. |

You often talk about how certain kinds of girls are preferred by white, upper middle class guys in their 20s. I am most definitely not that kind of person (physically speaking) yet I've done just fine with them. I went to South America with a bunch of people in this demographic a few years ago and they were all like "shit why can't girls in America look like this".
As for Latin men or men of other ethnic backgrounds, I only do well with them if they are culturally American/preppy/whitewashed etc... I think many more people are "democratic" about beauty than you give them credit for above, and since people are now exposed to all varieties of beautiful, the first kind of attraction is often conflated with the last. |

in regards to the specific demographic you mention, i think xoxo provides us with a good dose of anecdotal evidence about the beauty norms preferred by this group. note, too, that there is individual variation -- but that there is oftena good degree of consensus on many matters of beauty that other demographics might not necessarily share.
as to my personal experience, i've dated a wide variety of men. i think being a fundamentally nice person and having some fairly universal positive physical traits helps. i get attention from many types of doods. but i don't kid myself that some types of men won't, on average, not like me better than others. and again, this is about average s--generalizations, and perceptions of beauty are becoming more universal. but demographic group preferences still persist, and i doubt that will ever really change . |

The types of men that you won't think like you better than others are the types of men which like me better than others. We have markedly different experiences with the same demographic group.
Either we look less similar than I think we do or you're overestimating demographic consensuses re: beauty.
I don't see any major consensus - people post CGWBTs of all ethnicities, same with "rate this girl" threads. |

I have some friends who are completely white washed Asians, and I certainly don't have any ill will toward them. A lot of times, a person's other qualities can overcome one quality that I may find disagreeable. However, with you, it's like everything is disagreeable. |
