A girl at my NYE party was going on and on and on about how much she hated online dating because it's so old and she feels like it's as much of a waste of time as meeting people in a bar used to be.
To which I answered, "Yeah, well -- Match.com and its competitors are just an online bar -- that's it. They help you meet people, and from there, just like in every day personal interactions, it's up to you to do good things with it."
Sadly, the idea that people who are dating online know what they want and are defined by having a profile that says "I'm looking for a relationship" has been thrown out the window in many ways.

I don't think it takes all of the chemistry out.
It just reverses a lot of the process and I think it does take certain types of people who are uniquely determined to find a person right for them to really benefit from the medium.
Typically, you meet someone and first you have the attraction/spark/chemistry and THEN you learn about them and try to fill in the gaps to see if the chemistry is a good long-term investment.
With online dating, you create these long lists of knowledge about another person and it's your duty and hope to turn these facts and details into a relationship with chemistry.
I do believe both are still successful methods, and in an ideal world, I would prefer to meet someone IRL to online. It just so happens I've seen great results online. I attribute it to hard work, honestly.

honestly, a lot of this chemistry shit is flame.
it's serves a useful rhetorical purpose for someone like you (i.e. a girl who pretends to be thoughtful and analytical) as a way to rationalize female capriciousness.

sure
but no girl sees me from across the room and falls in love. im not bitter but i am ugly--which is kind of the point. i still manage to date and have relationships without immediately "clicking" with girls in the way that i think you mean.

OK, well the first conversation I had with my BF was about where we grew up (similar parts of the country), what sports we liked to play/watch, our childhood pets, and what led us to our current city.
A typical conversation with a guy that I'd have in a bar would be about (1) music we like to listen to (if a cool song comes on), (2) sports we like (if there's a sports game on or sports memorabilia on the walls), (3) where we went to college, (4) where we grew up, (5) hobbies we share or like, (6) places we've traveled to recently. Just basic stuff to ascertain if you have anything in common and if the person you're talking to has any personality at all.

I'm with CAC on this one.
I don't know any 30something female who has settled with a paunchy beta who she'd have given no time of day to in her 20s. It's one of those XOXO myths.
Relationships are kind of a crapshoot but most of the people I know who got married in their 30s to people that they met in their late 20s to early 30s seem happy with their partners, and if they're not happy with their partners it isn't because they settled. Shit's more complicated than that. Single people in their early 30s look for somewhat different things than single people in their early 20s, and a bit of betaness gets more prized as someone matures.

Nah. Your scenario resonates a lot more with the XOXO anti-shrew set (who always love these kinds of threads), but I don't know any women who settled in the way that you're talking about who got married and actually stayed married. The only settler I know who actually made it to the altar got divorced within a year of marriage.
People who settle in the XO sense don't stay together.
Some people (both men and women) settle in the sense that the person they end up with might not turn them on the most or get their jokes the most, but they turn them on enough and there's enough mutual chemistry to make it work for the long-term. But no one settles in the sense that they end up with someone who does very little for them in any sense of the word.

Let's take an example. Judy is a 24-year-old female in a large city. She idealizes the hipster/fashion/creative scene and thinks guys in boring professions (including front-office banking, law and medicine) are too stuffy and establishment for her. Maybe she's rebelling against her dad or she just dislikes the blue-shirt army. Who knows. But after dating a bunch of wannabe artists and bohemian types with none of their own money she realizes that she's not getting fulfilled by these guys. So she splits the difference and eventually settles down with a mid-office financedood who plays in a cover band on weekends, or a veterinarian who writes poetry in his spare time.
People do settle in the sense that their priorities change. This causes preferences to mature or even become discarded as time goes on.
But if you look for 30something shrews settling, that's all you'll find.

my sister is 28 and more attractive than the overwhelming majority of xoxo shrews. she is freaking out about being single while all of her friends are getting engaged/married.
is this really xoxo flame? seems like a pretty standard irl situation.
ps
she is not settling yet. i will update xoxo when this happens.

It's definitely both in her case.
She wants kids, etc. so it's not that unreasonable to be concerned about the ends and not just the means.

she recently moved to a different city.
but she's extremely social and probably has no trouble meeting people. she thought she was marrying someone a year ago and it blew up. then she dinged the next guy for looking good on paper but being kind of socially retarded and annoying to date.
so now she's A L O N E and unhappy about the situation. do not expect BIGSETTLING for in the near future, though.

of course, the thing about single women not settling is that they're obviously not the ones who are inclined in that direction.

she dinged a friend who wanted to leave his fiancee for her. flew out to meet her and tell her he'd been in love with her for years.
im sure that was awkward.

no, i think she was single.
she laughed when he asked her why they had never dated. reminded him he had been in a relationship the entire time she'd known him so it was not really her fault.
the guy's fiancee had banned him from seeing her. i suppose that was actually credited (if a little sad).

your boyfriend shouldn't appreciate this.
guys wanting to bang you are not your friends. they might be part of your social circle, but you should not encourage them.
