All their immediate friends and possibles through friends are married. It's difficult to meet single people among a bunch of folks with two cars and a couple strollers.

I'm from Wisconsin and know a lot of very traditional/religious people in Chicago, so that's a primary reason for my use of online dating (at the age of 26) as well. Most of my friends (and their friends) are engaged or married.

Yeah, most of my religious friends are married, and those who are in their later 20s/early 30s and are unmarried are very openly looking for a fast-track to marriage (not just any ol' LTR) using any and all methods. I met one of these types of guys a couple of years ago (30, unmarried, religious) and he was talking about what kind of wedding I would see myself having on our first date. Oddball.

Match.com has lost its appeal in larger cities. The novelty died a few years ago and while a lot of people have profiles up, that's not their primary method of meeting people.

A girl at my NYE party was going on and on and on about how much she hated online dating because it's so old and she feels like it's as much of a waste of time as meeting people in a bar used to be.

To which I answered, "Yeah, well -- Match.com and its competitors are just an online bar -- that's it. They help you meet people, and from there, just like in every day personal interactions, it's up to you to do good things with it."

Sadly, the idea that people who are dating online know what they want and are defined by having a profile that says "I'm looking for a relationship" has been thrown out the window in many ways.

Exactly - great way of putting it. The other sites that have a bit higher barriers to entry (like Eharmony) are probably better, or so I've heard. Match makes it free to put up a profile.

Online dating takes all of the interpersonal chemistry out of meeting someone, and people become slaves to their preferences. Dating becomes like a job interview and a lot of people on the more popular sites are looking to hook up - just like in a bar. Except at a bar you might actually toss away your superficial preferences when you meet someone who's fun to talk to and easy on the eyes.

I don't think it takes all of the chemistry out.

It just reverses a lot of the process and I think it does take certain types of people who are uniquely determined to find a person right for them to really benefit from the medium.

Typically, you meet someone and first you have the attraction/spark/chemistry and THEN you learn about them and try to fill in the gaps to see if the chemistry is a good long-term investment.

With online dating, you create these long lists of knowledge about another person and it's your duty and hope to turn these facts and details into a relationship with chemistry.

I do believe both are still successful methods, and in an ideal world, I would prefer to meet someone IRL to online. It just so happens I've seen great results online. I attribute it to hard work, honestly.

You can't work to create chemistry (or maybe you can, I've just never done it or seen it happen). It's either there or it isn't. You can work to get to know someone better and have a better appreciation for their likes, dislikes and personality, but it won't be organic. I've seen great relationships start online or through set-up situations but these were people who really clicked from the start.

Which filter eliminates more people, the chemistry filter or the preferences filter?

Apply the stricter filter first.

This makes sense. If people have very strict preferences, are looking for a serious relationship, and would never seriously date someone who failed those preferences, then online dating is the preferred medium.

Most people I know have a much stricter chemistry filter in practice, though. For better or for worse.

it's serves a useful rhetorical purpose for someone like you (i.e. a girl who pretends to be thoughtful and analytical) as a way to rationalize female capriciousness.

sure

but no girl sees me from across the room and falls in love. im not bitter but i am ugly--which is kind of the point. i still manage to date and have relationships without immediately "clicking" with girls in the way that i think you mean.

"Clicking" is not a sexual thing. I've clicked with objectively unattractive guys and so have many of my friends. You're lucky in that girls are less focused on appearance. I'm talking about fun conversation and spending time together - not sexual chemistry (although that is important and not as related to physical attractiveness as you might think).

No one looks across the room and falls in love.

OK, well the first conversation I had with my BF was about where we grew up (similar parts of the country), what sports we liked to play/watch, our childhood pets, and what led us to our current city.

A typical conversation with a guy that I'd have in a bar would be about (1) music we like to listen to (if a cool song comes on), (2) sports we like (if there's a sports game on or sports memorabilia on the walls), (3) where we went to college, (4) where we grew up, (5) hobbies we share or like, (6) places we've traveled to recently. Just basic stuff to ascertain if you have anything in common and if the person you're talking to has any personality at all.

it's funny how much they have to settle when they come to the realization that it's now or never. i see so many accomplished, attractive girls in their early 30s who are marrying paunchy, balding 35-40 year-old guys who have steady $60k/yr jobs. those same girls wouldn't have given their spouses the time of the day when they were 23.

Then again, these guys must know they're marrying women past their prime who fucked many different cocks when drunk, and barely knowing the name of the owner. Girls who can't bond or really love anyone because they've been fucked and chucked so much.

and it certainly doesn't matter how "accomplished" you are. Marrying for women is the best accomplishment.

Maybe change your diet. Start eating more fruits and veggies and lean meats and less junk food; you may also want to invest in a good multivitamin. Also, wash your face 2 times a day, drink plenty of water, and use a vitamin C facial masque like once or twice a week.

I'm with CAC on this one.

I don't know any 30something female who has settled with a paunchy beta who she'd have given no time of day to in her 20s. It's one of those XOXO myths.

Relationships are kind of a crapshoot but most of the people I know who got married in their 30s to people that they met in their late 20s to early 30s seem happy with their partners, and if they're not happy with their partners it isn't because they settled. Shit's more complicated than that. Single people in their early 30s look for somewhat different things than single people in their early 20s, and a bit of betaness gets more prized as someone matures.

Was this an instance of priorities changing and people making smarter decisions at 32 than at 22, or true settling? There's a fairly large difference between the two.

The girl who would only date indie rock musicians and trust fund baby hipsters at 22 may settle down with a banker at 31 but I don't think most people would call that settling.

I was giving an example of a girl who made stupid decisions at 22 but wised up when she was in her 30s, but still could be considered to have married someone at 31 that she'd never date at 22.

You can put any stable profession in there for banker and it still would be the same.

Nah. Your scenario resonates a lot more with the XOXO anti-shrew set (who always love these kinds of threads), but I don't know any women who settled in the way that you're talking about who got married and actually stayed married. The only settler I know who actually made it to the altar got divorced within a year of marriage.

People who settle in the XO sense don't stay together.

Some people (both men and women) settle in the sense that the person they end up with might not turn them on the most or get their jokes the most, but they turn them on enough and there's enough mutual chemistry to make it work for the long-term. But no one settles in the sense that they end up with someone who does very little for them in any sense of the word.

Perhaps, but people mature, grow up or get more realistic. I'd be similarly hesitant if I were in your shoes, but if you believe that people can genuinely change, or at least change their preferences, you should give people a free pass unless they prove you wrong.

Let's take an example. Judy is a 24-year-old female in a large city. She idealizes the hipster/fashion/creative scene and thinks guys in boring professions (including front-office banking, law and medicine) are too stuffy and establishment for her. Maybe she's rebelling against her dad or she just dislikes the blue-shirt army. Who knows. But after dating a bunch of wannabe artists and bohemian types with none of their own money she realizes that she's not getting fulfilled by these guys. So she splits the difference and eventually settles down with a mid-office financedood who plays in a cover band on weekends, or a veterinarian who writes poetry in his spare time.

People do settle in the sense that their priorities change. This causes preferences to mature or even become discarded as time goes on.

But if you look for 30something shrews settling, that's all you'll find.

They upgrade in the sense that they're now dating people who are more relationshippable. Whether that means they're more stable, or emotionally available, or whatever, I don't care. Single women in their 30s aren't so much looking for the fantasy fuck or the Prince Charming as they are looking for someone who is nice/cool, shares their values and is emotionally available even though they might be less exciting than the guys that might have excited them when they were in their early 20s.

People still have to meet a baseline attractiveness threshhold, which is pretty much "do I want to fuck this guy sober".

True. When it comes to relationships, people usually do what they want unless they have external pressure (like family pressure) leading them into another direction. I've seen people try to settle for someone they were lukewarm about and it never really lasts.

Yeah, it's pretty futile trying to convince them of anything other than what they want to see. It's like an inkblot - if they see a random couple who look to be in their 30s walking down the street where the woman is more attractive than the man, they'll assume the woman settled hard.

I'm not saying there's no settling going on IRL. I do think many people settle to some degree, but it's not to the overwhelming degree that the shrewbashers would have you think.

It's not like the vast majority of single thirtysomething females are getting married to people they find unattractive or otherwise undesirable for the sake of getting married or having kids (i.e. the "paunchy beta"). There's a baseline attraction and chemistry/values threshold that still has to be met even though people may care less about the superficial as they get older.

The most attractive/successful guys are either attached or dating younger women when in their early 30's. Even an attractive girl in her early 30's will have to date somewhat lower than she would have to 5 years earlier. There aren't enough alphas to go around.

I'm middle of the road on shrewdom. I'm in my early 30's myself so I know plenty of early 30's women. They vary from the sex and the city -wannabe types to the ones that truly want to get married NOW. I think the girls that are smart and get better priorities find someone good, and the ones that refuse to "settle" in any way end up alone.

I tend to agree with your last sentence, although I don't know many people who refuse to "settle" yet have relationships as a major priority in their lives. People who make something a priority generally find a way to make it happen in some way or another.

The people who go WAH WAH WAH I'M STILL SINGLE but focus most of their time on work, personal hobbies, family/friends, and other obligations that take up time will stay single for longer (not saying that's a bad thing - just that they're not prioritizing relationships as much as they think they are).

It's a pretty standard freakout, but the fact that she hasn't settled yet is more important than her freakouts. A good gauge of true desperation is to see what people do and who they start dating, not what they say.

Usually a freakout means "I can't find the kinds of people I actually want to meet", not "I'm not married yet". She also may have wacked-out preferences which guide her toward unavailable guys or guys out of her league.

OK, then a lot of her settling anxiety may be because not too long ago she thought she'd be set re: marriage and kids. She was in a marriage-track relationship which went to shit and probably had been out of the dating scene for a while. Understandable that she's unhappy about being alone since she hasn't been alone for a while.

No, they're not creepydoods about it and I find it endearing. They've never been inappropriate with me and have respected my relationship.

I'm just not attracted to them.

do you assume that every guy who's friends with you wants to bang you or date you? I wonder if most girls assume this.

No, I kind of assume the opposite. I.E. if the guy hasn't tried to bang me or date me yet, I assume he doesn't want to. And then we can be friends. It's much easier being friends with guys when there isn't that negative sexual tension there.

If you're attracted to a girl you're friends with, cr is not to make the interest obvious, huh?

I'd think that if the guy met the girl and he was attracted to her, he'd try to sleep with her or date her instead of just befriending her through the extended social circle while watching his other friends/acquaintances try to date her or sleep with her.

My BF didn't mess around with trying to be my "friend" for very long before we started dating.

your boyfriend shouldn't appreciate this.

guys wanting to bang you are not your friends. they might be part of your social circle, but you should not encourage them.

He's kind of like "meh". I knew them before he met me and I don't spend copious amounts of time with them. I don't do anything to encourage them but my BF isn't going to cause a scene with them. He has female friends that are interested in him and I just find it amusing.

Why? I once had a random massive breakout that was so bad that (1) my secretary wanted to send me to the emergency room because she thought I got an allergic reaction and (2) the guy I had been dating fairly intensely for a few months quickly faded out. I got prescription creams that cleared it up right quick, like in a month's time. Within a week it began to look better.

right, bc that was just a random breakout though. when you acne for over a decade, you need to address it internally to solve the problem.

I do, too. But usually these guys either (1) make a good amount of money or (2) have pretty solid chemistry with the girl. In all of these situations the girl is attracted to the guy on at least some level. I've been attracted to unfit doods in the past. As long as they aren't chubby they're probably fine.

everyone has somewhat different physical priorities. some girls care most about height, others don't care much. fitness, hair, muscles all vary in priority.

Same with guys to the same extent. Just look at the "rate this girl" threads here. Fitness, hair, height, tit size - no uniform preference.

But no girl will say "I prefer a balding/graying, out of shape, short dood with an average job and mediocre social skills". You can be one or two of those things as long as you're set on the others.
