But they are saying I'd be exempt, so wouldn't get OT pay.

Is this normal? I thought staff attorneys usually were non-exempt and entitled to OT?

The payment arrangement is only part of the test. Some salaried employees (salaried non-exempt) get overtime.

no staff attorney that I know makes overtime. But they have very reasonable billable requirements and opportunity to earn a bonus above the billables. So it's not a bad deal all-in-all if you want a balanced life.

It doesnt last forever and when you finally get fired you are unemployable. Its only any okay option for moms who really dont give a shit about their careers. When I see males taking these jobs I cringe. These kids really would be better off in shitlaw, taking home 60k, but learning how to do actual litigation.

PSA - not all lawyers are litigators.

And - that's simply not true that staff attorneys can't litigate or participate at any level of legal work. They will be used to the extent of their abilities.

Again - in most firms that I'm familiar with there are AT LEAST as many transactional attorneys as litigators - most have many more transactional attorneys than litigators.

And staff attorneys are given assignments they are capable of handling including depositions and going to court.

Many firms call their staff attorneys "associates" and to the outside world they are associates and "staff attorney" is an internal record keeping matter.

I was being responsive to steve's comment and the response is you would never necessarily know whether the attorney working opposite of you is an "associate" or a "staff attorney" based on the title on their business card, the cut of their suit, the type of briefcase that they care or the make of their tie.

Court appearances and depositions are a pretty small portion of litigation. Motion practice massively swamps both. Of course, I'm talking about nonshitlaw.

Again - untrue. many firms converted a LOT of associates to staff attorneys and kept their staff attorneys because they could bill them at a lower rate when clients were screaming about bills. Staff attorneys are probably more recession proof.

Also, there is not up or out for staff attorneys. If you continue to be profitable to the firm they'll keep you around forever.

Most firms reported 10-20% but counting all the stealths, push outs, long runways for departures for seniors, etc. it was probably upwards of 20% for the v100 on average. Firms like Latham cut a third of their associates if you total up everyone starting the clock at Bear Stearns and run it through the end of 2009. But you're right in this argument that it was still worse to be a staff attorney.

3.3 is below median at NU. like texas, NU has a relatively inflated median of around 3.4 or above.

It is 3.3 (3.2-3.4 - it isn't a set number but there are ranges for grades).

Man, the saddest thing about the internet is that I won't get to actually see your face when I get back in the game. But don't worry, I know you'll be mad.
