"This woman is brought before the people of Whokania accused of waging war on the threads of my Kingdom. Many proud and brave Whokanian threads have fallen before this foul woman's cruel blade. The people of Whokania demand justice!"

The crowd erupted in a jubilant cry. For years, the threads of Whokania lived in fear of Rowanus and her Mod army, never knowing when or how they might become the victims of her heedless band of savage outlaws.

"My King! For her crimes against the hilarious threads of this Kingdom, the punishment under the laws of Whokania must be death!" shouted Gibreel Farishtus, the God-King's nephew and chancellor to the senate. An avalanche of applause and cheers rocked the marble square, the cries of the people sounding out the catharsis of thousands of oppressed and brutalized threads.

"What sayeth the courts?" inquired the God-King. The people's eyes all locked on Gatticus Finchus, high priest of the holy court, standing to Gibreel's left.

"My lord, the laws of Whokania are as he says. Should my lord find Modius Rowanus guilty of destroying innocent threads, her punishment shall be death." The crowd roared their support for the restless spirits that for years cried out from the netherboard for swift and cruel justice against their murderers.

"So be it." said the God-King. "But first, I shall not impose death without seeking the counsel of my cousin Tennis Doodius and his wise and aged father, the former Emperor Whokebius." Mogul turned and fixed his gaze upon former Emperor. The uprising of the Mogulians in late 2009 B.C. had seen Mogul dethrone the great Whokebius, uniting all of the Whokanian provinces into one Kingdom under his rule. Whokebius was a formidable adversary to Mogul's ascension, and thus Mogul saw fit to retain the former Emperor's counsel. It was this same calculated prudence and objectivity that allowed Mogul to rally the oft-warring country provinces against the capital city and secure the throne of Whokania, putting to death the entire legislature, who under the aging Whokebius had done nothing but r-thread for decades. The people of the city welcomed Mogul's invading armies, throwing roses on the streets as they entered this very square with the r-threading senators' heads on pikes.

Tennis Doodius leaned towards the ear of Whokebius and whispered the God-King's request. Whokebius, no longer able to speak, scrawled his response on a slip of paper and handed it to his son. Tennis Doodius glanced quickly at the paper and smirked. He walked over towards Mogul, knelt, and pressed the paper into his hand. "My lord, so sayeth my proud father, Emperor Whokebius."

Mogul glanced down into his fist and slowly unfolded the paper. The air was thick with tension, the crowd eagerly surveying the God-King's face, desperate for any sign of the verdict.

Mogul chuckled. The crowd let out an uncertain gasp. "So sayeth Whokebius," spake the God-King, reading the slip of paper, "'Whoomp, there it is.'"

The roar of the citizens of Whokania could be heard for miles in all directions.

on one such jaunt, i asked father about the stars as night fell upon us. he traced the many constellations with his finger, of cancer and cassiopeia, of libra and leo. i remember thinking of the stars proximity to one another in those constellations, bound by some familial magnetism. i told father of these thoughts and he laughed.

it would years before i knew what the word proximity meant, or fully understood the vastness of a light year, the emptiness of our universe, and it would be years more before i scored acid as irie as that father and i dropped in the basement, being thrust into adventure in imagined openings, in imagined forests, to lay and imagine a whole series of stars in the sky.
