The best things we can do, in this order:
1. Have a massive, I'm talking massive, increase in the number of medical schools open and training doctors. This is the single most cost effective and politically feasible thing that can be done to fix healthcare in this country.
2. Increase taxes to redistribute the hoarded wealth that is choking off economic growth and help balance our budget
3. Stop trading with dirt poor countries. Set up super regional trading blocs where we only trade G&Ses with countries where labor rates are roughly similar.

1. If you really want to fix the doctor shortage/costs, get rid of the AMA. Having a gov't mandated monopoly on taking care of people (there are some minor exceptions i.e. nurse practioners) is what causes us to pay out the nose (there is also the health insurance moral hazard issue that has been propagated by the gov't).
2. "the hoarded wealth" Where exactly do you think the wealthy hoard their assets? Or could it be that the vast majority is not kept under their pillows but is instead INVESTED already creating the much needed capital infastructure which improves productivity which allows for growth.
3. If you stop trading with poor countries, all you are going to accomplish is to raise costs (and thus lower standard of living). I honestly cannot believe that there are people still out there that think that protectionism is a valid strategy. Even in circumstances where you think the other nation is being "abusive" by keeping its currency down (or other means) you are still better of trading with them rather than shutting the border. See Smoot Hawley Act, or better yet learn from the history of mercantilism.

2. I suggest you look at this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_direct_investment
The US has both a net POSITIVE FDI and is actually the largest. So again, I am not sure where you are getting your "it's not being reinvested here". If that was truely the case, and corps where moving more and more towards FDI Outflows, why has net FDI not shrunk (or become negative) infact it has GROWN. Now the data only goes up to 07 but that should be sufficient to dispel your notion.
3. "whose real wages have declined for 30 odd years " Sorry, your flame has jumped the boat. Even if in inflation adjusted dollars the median wage has stagnated, you are not taking into account WHAT that flat wage can buy now vs 30 years ago. Lets keep this simple, I give you $10,000 in 2011 dollars and $10,000 in 1980 dollars (so it will be probably be around $4,000 inflation adjusted). You can decide to spend that money in either the shopping malls of the 1980s or 2011. Which do you pick?

"wow. the world's largest economy is also the largest source of investment. color me fucking impressed. "
This is NET. That means since we are the largest and wealthiest nation should it not follow that it also works against us when it comes to having a higher outflow of FDI. So long as the law of large numbers comes into play, size is really not going to be a large variable. Freedom, transperency, the legal system, education of workforce etc. are all FAR more important.
"um, pretty sure i'm going to be able to buy more shit in the 80s, bro. "
Says the guy typing on a computer conntected to the internet. Will step into a car that has 1/5 the chance of killing him upon crash due to much improved safety features. Will go out and buy Organic spinach next time he is grocery shopping. Will co-ordinate his next date via text message on his cellphone that wieghs 1lb....
You have to begin to think not about just the inflation adjusted dollar value, but WHAT you can buy with that. does $10,000 do you alot of good in the desert?

I'm pretty sure that while wages have stagnated and even declined slightly, total COMPENSATION has actually increased ahead of inflation.
Your hoarded wealth theory is fucking retarded. And we get the better end of the deal trading with poor countries bro.
Massive increase in medical schools, however, is a fantastic idea.

total compensation is only increasing because of... the medical insurance benefit.
do you think that 50% of people having almost 0 or negative net wealth is a good thing for society? at some point, when wealth concentrates too narrowly, not enough people can afford to buy your shit, which hurts everything. of course, since corporations are content to get their earnings from abroad now a days...
and no, "we" do not. some people in this country do, yes.
jfc. do you really think we'd face economic implosion if TVs we're manufactured for 8 bucks an hour instead of .25? especially if we had a proper tax policy for corporations that encouraged the companies to pay out earnings in the form of worker wages and/or company reinvestment instead of the trough feeding for executives and shareholders?

"total compensation is only increasing because of... the medical insurance benefit."
--OK, so you were kind of talking out of your ass. Anyway, what's wrong with that? People are getting that benefit, it's a real benefit, but slippery motherfuckers like you keep trotting out that misleading falling wages stat like it proves something.
"do you think that 50% of people having almost 0 or negative net wealth is a good thing for society?"
--I'm not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing. I know it's a bad thing to be in that 50%. Has it ever been significantly different, anywhere? I think you're talking out your ass again about the shirt and I'm not sure what your point is.
"and no, "we" do not. some people in this country do, yes."
--Everyone benefits from lower prices. If we stop using that cheap labor, some other country will take advantage of it to our detriment.
What tax policy do you suggest? US companies have only really been hoarding cash for a couple years. You can debate the wisdom of that move, but it's not a surprising development considering economic and political conditions.

free abortions
medicare STOPS at age 80; anything beyond that has to be paid out of pocket (maybe then people will actually start dying with dignity again)

"90% estate tax on >3mil net worth"
The estate tax has always been an appealing target. The argument that most use it that it would not have as much of the negative impact that other taxes do; i.e. that there would be little discouragement to produce since the tax hits after you are dead. The major fallacy of this argument is that in America we are VERY family oriented. You see many entreprenuers continue to spend frugally and work their asses off, even after making it big, so that they can give their kids the best possible chance in life. You remove that incentive with a 90% estate tax. Infact what you do is encourage free-living at the end of that persons life. Take a 80 year old factory owner. With this estate tax, he is no longer motivated to leave his factory to his kids (they wont get it). So what does he do? He sells it to someone who is going to most probably be less competent than he was at running the thing, and spends his money on frivolous shit. We all lose when this happens. See this @ 1:56: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRpEV2tmYz4&feature=related
"state seizure of all colleges/unis; 3/4 immediately shut down and half of those turned into trade schools"
State subsidization of loans so retards could get BAs at TTTs is what caused this problem in the first place. Your natural response is to have MORE gov't?

Lets run through a simplified scenerio:
You have a Purchaser and Entreprenuer.
P has $1M and E has a factory creating $100K of value/utility per year. P can purchase a piece of unused land and build a factory for his $1M that produces $90K of utlity. Or, he can (if they reach a deal) purchase the factory for $1M from E.
Now lets look at the two options
With Estate tax (that is material):
E no longer sees the value in keeping his factory for his son. He therefore sells it to P for $1M. E then spends the $1M on non-productive purchases (i.e. consumption which is effectively wealth destruction). Our situation produces an output of $100K utility per year and the qualitative happyness of the consumption by E.
Without estate tax:
E does not sell and P is forced to buy the land and build his own building. Total utility produced for the rest of the society is now $190K/year
Do you see the difference? They key is the consumption. Now consumption is not unequivocally bad, the entire point of investment is in the hopes of increasing ones (or ones family's future consumption). The problem is that consumption is effectively the destruction of accumulated wealth. Why would you want a taxation mechanism that actively encourages this to such a large extent?

-allow the southeast states (east of texas, below north carolina) to secede. ruthlessly enforce borders to keep them out of the new US. this will slash healthcare and welfare costs.
-pay all ghetto blacks and remaining white trash to move to reservation-like plots of land situated in barren areas of the great plains. they will be provided with controlled model towns featuring walmarts, pawn shops, churches, etc, but they can't leave the reservation without government permission.
-get rid of 65% of undergrad colleges, start hundreds of well-funded vocational schools. remodel education system to start funneling people into vocational school at early ages if they can't pass certain academic benchmarks.
-imprison people for becoming obese sans glandular or medical problems. they have to weigh in once a year, term of imprisonment and hard labor is related to amount of obesity. in some cases they are kept in prison until they achieve a normal weight.
-deny entitlements to all boomers who have tax records that demonstrate they are capable of living off other retirement investments and pensions
-reduce drug penalties to minimal charges and large fines, but heavily increase jail time for violent and gun-related crime.
-if a woman can prove her income is below a certain level, government pays her to get an abortion, cash money on the spot. limited to one a year so they don't just turn their wombs into cash machines.
-government pays a high bounty for unregistered/unlicensed/illegal firearms, disposes of them once they're turned in
-currently incarcerated non-violent drug offenders can get their sentences reduced or removed by performing a commensurate amount of military service and completing job training. any fuckups and they go back to jail and start over
that should start to get us straightened out pretty quickly

you could get the real trash in there without too much trouble. provide them with mcmansions, dirt bike tracks, promises of no work and minimal law enforcement, and you'll get takers. poors already self-select into trailer parks and ghettos where they live off government handouts and preying on each other; this is just an organized way of conducting an organic social process.
we can get around the constitutional and enforcement issues in a number of ways. make the reservations non-US sites like the indian reservations, monkey around with statutes so a number of reservations activities are crimes if they leave the res, containing them there for fear of prison, make a breach of their res contract result in forced military service with the option to return to the res so we can keep track of them, etc.
law enforcement inside the res will be minimal and brutal, encouraging the communities to be self-policing. trained mercenaries will intervene in cases where gangs are becoming too predatory on the people who just want to get wasted and eat until they explode. the security forces will be able to quickly and brutally deal with any behavior that's too seriously predatory - a few disappearances and massacres carried out in secret should create a "foggy cliff" effect for violent behavior.

Mandate payment of overtime (1.5 times the regular hourly rate or vacation time) for any business with 5+ employees. No more making employees work 50 hours a week without paying them. If you want to pay the standard rate, hire an extra employee to work the 10 extra hours. This should cut down unemployment but 1-2% right there. It will also keep more skilled workers in the economy.
Also, increase estate tax to help pay off the national debt.
Put inflationary policies into full force.
Invest heavily in R&D.
Raise retirement age to 70. Yes they will keep jobs but we also can't afford to pay them to sit on their ass.

1. Cap credit card rates at between 10 and 12%
2. Eliminate speculation in oil market, limit to market participants.
Economy is driver by retail spending. Everytime fuel goes up those on fixed income, in excess of 80% of americans,
money that would have gone to restaurants, clothing, home imp., etc... goes into the tank to get to work. When it rose too rapidly people had to put it on their credit cards many with interest above 30%. When prices droped, they increased spending but did not pay down debt. Next time oil spikes too high we are poised for a collapse. The collapse of the housing market was also percipitated by the rapid rise in fuel costs. when a person had an adjustable rate mortgage ready to reset and was planning on using the additional funds now going into their tank to absorb the mortgage payment increase, they are left with the choice to keep making the house payment untillthey lose their job, or put the money into their tank to get to work.
The markets will take care of themselves when spending increases, but retirees and public retirement systems cannot base their projections on sustained yeilds between 8 and 15 percent on investments.
The above two steps along with drilling for American oil would turn the economy round within 30 days. Reality is we are headed for a very big tailspin, there are still plenty of mortgages to reset.

America is on a sinking ship and that ship is the world. The various countries just occupy different levels.
Unfucking America would require a look at the global economy. The fucking of America is really just a part of the overall re-balancing of the global economy. You didn't think 5% of the world's population could consume 25% of the world's energy forever did you?
As the ship sinks, every country will be scrambling for the lifeboats (ie, necessary, tangible goods like oil and food). As currency debasement spirals out of control (a direct consequence of a debt-based economy in its deaththrows), everyone will be trying to use their increasingly worthless fiat paper to purchase limited resources and land, aka too much money chasing too few goods. Ron Paul will not be able to save the dollar folks. It's too late.
Right now, the major concerns, imo, are fighting threats we don't even realize exist yet, but will arise once a currency crisis hits. Oil and food inflation will be a MAJOR problem in the next 10 years. Forget about unfucking America brothers. We'll be in a full on global crisis worse than the 1930s. Hopefully another World War doesn't break out as a result.
The most important thing we can do is move towards localized food production. If you think I'm completely off base, let's debate.
Edit: btw, as i write this, gold hit a new high @ $1575/oz.
