Cost of living is low as fuck. Elizabeth, NODA, and Plaza Midwood you can seriously rent like a huge house with a yard for 1000/mo, or you can find some sick deals on apts for like 650-750. Groceries are a bit cheaper than the bigger cities. Lots of driving, so you'll spend more on gas, but otherwise pretty fucking low COL.

I guess I'm technically a young professional, but I don't really hit up the CLUB scene, so I'm probably not the best person for this, but I do know there is a pretty decent and growing nightlife scene downtown. There are tons of art galleries in NODA if that's your thing. There's a great dive bar/punk rock club in the ghetto called The Milestone that I frequent. If you're into outdoorsy shit there is awesome hiking/canoeing/drunken river tubing just a couple hours down the road in the BIGSMOKYMTNS, or just like a few minutes outside of town in the Whitewater center, which has a cool whitewater course and some pretty good mtn biking trails. Once you meet peeps the backyard BBQ scene is cool too.

Because Charlotte got hit by the recession hard as fuck, and they were overbuilding even before the second biggest employer in town got bought out.

But this person, I'm assuming, would have a good job. And if you're with the right firm, in the right practice area, you're alright.

Charlotte sucks. It's bland, soulless.

Charlotte is only souless for souless people. Introverts and aspies who want a prebuilt scene they can just step into effortlessly will never have a good time here, but there is a solid network of cool people having a good time every night of the week.

i'm from nc faggot. it's widely acknowledged by pretty much everyone that charlotte is just a boring collection of a lot of people spread out over a large area.

there's absolutely nothing noteworthy about it. bbq in charlotte is shit compared to smaller towns about an hour away. the people are mostly not from NC because nobody actually grows up in charlotte, people only move there. there arent many good bands that come through for a city of its size (raleigh pwns the fuck out of charlotte for this), and nobody gives a flying fuck about professional sports in NC (aside from maybe BIGNASCAR). charlotte has absolutely no character whatsoever

yeah, but if you view it as a pretty, (souless) and posh staging area for the rest of the carolinas (mountains <2 hours away, the best bbq in the country an hour away at most, charleston and lowcountry beaches 3 hours away, bluegrass and pottery traditions in the yadkin valley an hour away, asheville two hours away, it quickly becomes a very very cool place to be.

the day trips are fucking fantastic. and you're a lot more likely to be able to hold down hours that allow you to take weekend day trips.

cost of living: dirt cheap

recreating: OK, but not as good as you'd expect. it's a couple hour drive to good spots in the mountains and there isn't much else

nightlife: meh

neighborhoods: boring. you will never walk anywhere at any point living in 99% of charlotte

It is a suburban city, but there is some shit going on. You just have to drive there.

As to the above poster talking about no offers, true dat, but I assume this poaster already has a job offer, or wouldn't move there without one (maybe she is in law school, then that would be a bigger consideration).

As to layoffpwning, the worst of that is probably over.

i'm from nc. i love my state. charlotte is fucking boring as fuck. there are some driving cities (austin, nashville, to a much lesser extent raleigh) that are cool, vibrant places with an indentity. charlotte is just basically one gigantic fucking suburb with a few BIGBANKERS plopped in the middle

nc is great, our large cities fucking suck

In any case, Chapel Hill/Carborro is by far the best city in the state.

Chapel Hill/Carrboro is only the best in so far that it's in the greater triangle. On it's own it's just a cool college town and if you're not in college then it gets old fast. I think Asheville is tops except that there aren't many professional opportunities for transplants and there are far too many retirees.

this is credited. but NC is NC to a certain extent, and if you want to end up in raleigh but have a current opportunity in charlotte, better to jump on it now and become part of the NC club than try to convince some company in raleigh you want to move there from the west coast or something. have the NC bar, have an NC driver's license and voter registration, and have NC/Raleigh headhunters realize they should be contacting you.

it's a process.

This is a good point. I think the balance is shifting a little though. Charlotte does have banking, but that's ebbing, and the triangle is starting to pick up with more and more VC. Like a silicon valleyish renaissance going on there. I'd like to get back. I think IP background would help a lot since pharma and tech is the main footprint and growing.

tcr. i want to end up back in the triangle and have an IP background and bio/pharma experience, but my few attempts to get back there in the VC/in-house space met with little success because I think they went for people who were already in the area or around the corner. i didn't even get any screening interviews for any of these positions, despite having qualifications to the letter.

so i moved to CLT and now practice IP there. i actually don't want to jump ship yet because i really enjoy my practice here right now, but it seems like i'm better positioned to go for in-state opportunities should i decide to do so.
