She reacts much as the lowland gorilla does: she ignores it, she reacts as though the attention she is receiving is positive (by comparison, freer frolicking with a fistful of vomit), or she, at great mental strain, strings together a frustrated sequence of angry ape calls and pounds her chest.

I assume that fascination with shit is the only mental property these two links in the Great Chain of Being literally share, but the analogy is too powerful to ignore.
