He was filling out the application during class. I declined and told him to do his work.
"Why the fuck won't you be writing me this recommendation shit?"
I responded that he might want to consider asking another teacher. He said, "Why you gonna write me some bad shit?" I said, "I would have to write the truth, that you received a 65 and - while bright - are lazy and unmotivated. I would ask another teacher in a class you're doing well in to write you the letter."
He says, "But they all said they won't write me one. This shit is fucked up. You happy ass teachers all suck dick. I don't learn shit here. I don't get no good grades in none of my classes because of you people."
Me, "Right now, the only thing I'm recommending for you is you close your mouth and do your work." |

And yes, I've already intervened, documented, called his parents, given detentions, suspensions, contacted administration etc. I routinely throw him out of class.
The kid is much smarter than average, and 100X lazier and more vicious. He does not live in the projects, and has 2 parents that work for a living.
The kid would benefit from getting YO'd, but he tiptoes right up to the line of illegality or a superintendent's suspension and stops so it's unlikely he will. Sociopath. The kid will land where he belongs without any help from me - the gutter. |

I wrote a statement for the poor girl and called her mother. So did the other teacher in the room. She finally got detention, he got 2 days suspension. Principal wanted to give her 3 days suspension for a "threat of violence". I damn near got into a fistfight with principal and told him the boy violated the bullying initiative. |

And not like 16 or 17 year olds but the 12 and 13 year olds riding around on their bikes. I dunno, it was weird just to see like condoms strewn around a park and beer cans all over. I couldn't understand what a lot of people were saying when I'd be talking to them and I left feeling like there's just no point in that town/subsection existing. Like, bomb the shit out of it. It'd be best.

you guys don't understand why people think it's good for minority kids to have minority teachers but i think your experiences highlight the reasons why. for one, the kids respect them more (whether this is fair or not, it's just the way it is).
also, the teachers have more understanding of the issues these kids are dealing with (no dad, single teenage moms, ghetto, drug-filled neighborhoods, etc.)

I could honestly sit there and read the paper in class and no one would call me on it, but I don't. I try to teach them to read and write. This week I brought in 50 cent's concert rider and we're working on contracts and informational texts. We're negotiating the class rules.
Maybe 5-10(25) kids participate in each class. The rest say things like, "Mrs. X doesn't make us do this shit, she lets us color." or "I'm sleeping, I ain't bothering you, why you bothering, me mister?"
You try your best, you create entertaining lessons, you engage them, and they give you next to nothing. Sure there's 2 or 3 in each class that aren't so bad, so you teach. It's a job, not a calling.
What are you currently failing at doing again? |

Super Troll MD Esq. actually detests these kids like you say. He seems to place a lot of the blame on the institution and parents and the students' outbursts are, you gotta admit, pretty funny ('Nigga what be a magazine?').
But to suggest that you can 'meet' with these kids and talk to them on their terms and make them understand that 'lol you're doing this wrong buddy!' is just a naive and stupid opinion that reeks of naivety and stupidity. While the kids have problems at home, they ultimately know that throwing desks and bringing drugs to school is 'wrong'. They know they act and they know that they game the system to get out of being disciplined or to hold something over a teacher.
This isn't about minorities being better situated to help these kids (which is arguable at best) or about there being a lack of empathy for their position (which is almost surely not lacking). It's about 10-14 year olds who are violent, mentally ill people without a care for pretty much anything. If you think you can 'fix' that, you're a fucking god.
I'm not going to bat for Supertroll, I'm speaking from my personal experiences in poor neighborhoods and with kids. A small minority DO want help and DO value education. A greater number say 'Fuck the world, get money'. It's sad. But YOU (or anyone individually) cannot fix it.
And if you want the other side of the story, I got to teach little poor kids in the 1st or 2nd grade for a semester. It was cool but even then, you could tell they were developing problems. When they were frustrated, they responded with anger. When they were confused, they acted out in rage. You could calm them down more since they're kids and want positive reinforcement and attention, but wtf do you do when they're bigger and more independent? A decent number of those kids were already talking about only Mom being home and that she would be asleep on the couch when they walked home from school.
They knew how to do ghetto dances really good though which would be cute if it wasn't so sexual. They were good kids but you could tell where they were going. Obviously even in the middle and high schools where they would wind up, those places are nothing like what OP is talking about (to the best of my knowledge), but even if it's half as bad, this isn't a problem you fix with 'hey buddy why are you so angry ?' |
