I was walking down to the train the other day, thinking about a really tough conversation I need to have with someone I care deeply about. As I walked, I became aware of footsteps coming up behind me. I glanced to the side as a man about my age passed me, looking over at me as he passed. Once he was a few yards ahead, he stopped and turned to face me.

"What’s wrong, Madface?"

Jerked out of my thoughts, I looked up at him.

"I’m sorry, excuse me?"

And the nickname. It felt overly familiar, as though he had some right to create an intimate relationship with some strange woman on the street.

I have a right to my feelings and expressions. I don’t owe it to anyone, particularly strange men, to look happy, regardless of how I’m feeling.

And clearly we should want to chat with him because “even his grandmother” has figured out how to use AIM (or was it Yahoo? or Gchat?). But he doesn’t actually like talking on the phone, so don’t expect that. Or an into email that’s more than a line. He “doesn’t put that much effort into meeting women at bars” so why would he do it on a dating site?

Right. Dude’s a charmer, clearly.

My favorite part was at the end, where he got all pissy that some woman got upset because he called her a “fat cow”. Apparently it doesn’t matter if fat women have feelings because he doesn’t care. Yeah, he actually said that.

Unsurprisingly, my response to his desire for a chat was a resounding “no”, along with an explanation that I don’t like talking to men who are so clearly douchebags and that his profile was one of the most repellent things I’d ever seen.

He actually wrote back. He wrote back and asked me why his profile was so awful.

And God help me I actually responded (after the necessary “you’re trolling, right?”). I told him that the whole tone sounded bitter and that calling women who were thinking about writing to him “pathetic” was off-putting. I told him that most women, regardless of whether or not he might consider us “fat cows” (apparently, anything under the 220 lbs. he weighs is acceptable - funny, because I weigh less than he does and I’m still fat. Obese, even) find it misogynistic and disturbing that he thinks it’s okay to be cruel to other people just because he doesn’t find them attractive.

I even did a brief explanation of why it’s not okay to refer to women as “females”. (Adjectives need nouns, asshole. I’m not some random female something - dog? cow? pigeon? - I’m a human being and female [identified] human beings are generally called women.)

Like I said, I must be a masochist.

Of course, his response was the obligatory last refuge of the hopelessly misogynistic asshole: accusations of rambling.

I am disgusted by the American government right now

I am disgusted that my agency as an adult woman is less important than a clump of cells that has the potential to become a human being. It sickens me that I am expected - by some dude who will never get pregnant, no less - to only have sex if I’m willing to give birth should my birth control fail.
