DC is surprisingly unprestigious actually. They do a ton of boring local shit. The ones I've met have been pretty weak, too. EDVA is better.

Oh. Do you think that DC is in the top 5?

How much would you need for DC or SDNY? Would 3 years at a V10, District Court Clerk, 4th Circuit Clerk be enough for DC or SDNY or does one typically need 2nd Cir or DC Cir clerkship?

I'd swap EDVA for EDNY. EDVA handles a lot of national security prosecutions. EDNY isn't nearly as exciting (all the financial crimes go to SDNY).

If financial crimes = exciting for you then this is correct, but I'm going to say for the average joe law student who is willing to be real with himself and not care about prestige, the organized crime shit coming out of EDNY makes it way more exciting than SDNY.

SDNY is obviously more prestigious though.

A lot of people ask this question, and I don't think there's an easy answer.

Civil division make the same gov't dollars, with less stress than criminal, working gov't hours. It might not be as prestigious as crim division, but it's a pretty great gig to have, I'd imagine.

my understand is the "prestige" can very from office to office in the sense that some civil divisions do more affirmative litigation than others (govt suing people instead of defending). Some offices, all the interesting shit is done by the regional US Labor office or Main Justice Civil etc., with the USAO civil group left to the scraps (habeas, bivens shit, ftca defense, civil forfeiture)

This is generally true. Main Justice is the more interesting place to be for civil work and the US Attorney's Offices are the more interesting place for criminal work.

That being said, even civil defense litigation in a USAO is preferable, in my opinion, to slaving away in a law firm snobitorium. You make decent money (six figures before long) and good benefits, and you get autonomy to litigate cases in federal court.

yeah, civil AUSAs basically run their own cases without the compartmentalization you see in law firms, from what i understand. That's valuable experience.

1. U.S. Senator

a. Legal Counsel to U.S. Senator

b. District Director to U.S. Senator

each requires travel to D.C., but pay as a Senator, Counsel, or District Director is over 100k.

2. U.S. Representative

a. Legal Counsel to U.S. Rep.

b. District Director to U.S. Rep.

See above.

3. FBI Agent

a. Alternatively, staff attorney to the FBI.

FBI has field offices in every major city and secondary cities, the work is somewhat interesting though the pay can be borderline insulting.

4. JAG Officer

a. pick a branch of the U.S military and get er done. If you are a Marine, you also probably get to be shot at. Being a marine makes you instantly likeable to just about everyone and makes you an instant alpha male regardless of height, build, or ability to pull girls. If you are a female poster, the Marines is also a fine option. Downside, you become a military lawyer with few transferrable legal skills once you leave the service.

5. EEOC or other agency options.

Um...this is a last resort. If you want the good work and prestige, just do D.C.

There are plenty of good civil AUSA positions involving affirmative civil enforcement (e.g., health care fraud enforcement in South Florida is huge and spreading quickly to other parts of the country).

Now. No joke. It takes forever to get selected. 3-4 months. Then after that it could be 6-8 months before all the paper work and background check stuff can be done. I think you could start work, but it is conditional. Might as well just stay at the firm until everything is good to go.

i went to good non HYP ug, CCN with good grades, law review COA clerkship from active, good and respected judge, midlevel in biglaw. i would prefer to stay in Cali or go to Florida, but I am pretty much open to anywhere. i dont have any trial experience though, and very little white collar experience.

you should be competitive. I went to a TTT50 law school but swung my way into a couple of clerkships, would love to get a sniff from a USAO somewhere w/o having to work at a firm or do state prosecution first.

i will do ADA first if it helps me get into a desired district. will also do a dct clerkship if it will help as well. im concerned that lack of geographical ties and lack of trial experience is an auto-ding for many of these districts

Can't you get connected with some AUSA's who can shuffle your application in the right direction? This obviously makes getting hired much easier than blindly sending.

i'm a striver and i know that i cannot compete with the very best. i was ttt at my prior highly prestigious firm and clearly dumber than my co-clerks. i'd rather just do lifestyle somewhere.

you're just now deciding to throw in the towel? this is relevant to my interests. im a current striver clerk, probably the dumbest among my co-clerks. no offer pwned. rather than looking for biglaw again im considering just moving to are-country and forming babby with wife. credited? loans are close to being paid off and a non-issue.

Like a lot of strivers, I burned out after several years of biglaw. The money is not that great for what u do and the best I can hope for his partner in some lower v100 making barely more than 300k working 24-7 as a senior partner's bitch.

Couldn't hurt to try C.D. Cal. They have a decent amount of turnover and a few years ago they used to hire people through the honors program straight out of law school/clerkships (not sure if that's still true). S.D. Fla. is big on drug cases, so you'd definitely get good trial experience down there.

People who would be competitive for clerkships I suppose (http://www.justice.gov/careers/legal/entry-participants.html#usao-cac). So depending on circuit/district, probably top 5% or 10%, law review/journal, and maybe people who have shown an interest in criminal law/litigation? I honestly don't know, but there's gotta be someone out there who has done it (maybe not straight through, but coming off a clerkship).

Basis is mixture of:

1. My impressions of AUSAs I've met from various districts (and their "prestige"). I've met a lot at the National Advocacy Center.

2. Desirability of location.

3. Generic lay prestige of district.

4. General complexity of types of cases handled.

5. Size of office.

6. Types of lawyers hired generally (some offices hire BigLaw/clerkship folks, who most people would say have better legal "prestige" or "pedigree," while other offices hire more from local DA offices).
