the extent of my shoe cleaning is wiping my 350$ shoes with a wet paper towel every few months
what do i need to do
tips?
suggestions?

shoe cream is better for the leather than wax polish, although wax will give you a better shine.
Many people will polish with shoe cream 2-3 times for every one time with wax polish
edit: also, you need a polish applicator - the brush is just for buffing after the polish dries. I usually use old, worn out sport socks

(1) take out the laces
(2) wipe them down with a damp cloth or paper towel
(3) apply conditioner, then leave them to dry for 10 minutes
(4) apply polish (I prefer creams to wax), then leave them to dry for 10 minutes
(5) use a soft cloth (or a horse hair brush then a soft cloth) to polish them
(6) apply edge dressing (if needed)
