In addition, if that firm does shit like personal injury, insurance defense, or divorce settlement, it is a complete shitlaw. |

being unemployed sucks, but so does working in shitlaw. I worked in shitlaw and it was worse than working as a waiter.
if I were you, i would try really hard to get a non-law corporate job. |

*all contingency for the most part with developed workers comp practice is the norm.
*many of your clients will likely not speak english.
*many winnable cases are lost because 1) jury doesn't like plaintiff or 2) plaintiff doesn't follow through with treatment
*many of your calls is dealing with IRATE clients who wonder why it takes so long to get money.
*get used to facilitating LAWCASH loans which are terrible.
*much of the work is boilerplate.
*salary sucks, but if the place has a developed clientele with good "marketing" (not adverts...think more "hand to hand" marketing)...you can hit and do well.
*exciting in the sense that you in workers comp court a lot but not at superior court too much as if you are, then you are doing it wrong.
it's a crap shoot. in truth, it's what most people THINK OF as law. you are a legit lawyer fighting cases. But a lot of it is amending roggs, herding clients to doctors, getting your chiros/PT/radiologists all in a row, amending discovery, compelling documents, et alia. If the PA has a developed situation (think HUNDREDS of open cases), then you can make some money. The learning curve isn't too bad. I got an offer at the place I am clerking at, but turned it down for something tax related. I don't regret shitlaw chasing during LS at all and actually would recommend to those with "people skills". If you legit are the kind of guy someone like "immediately", then you will be able to soothe clients into compliance and the defense bar really hates their own clients so it's not that bad.

i know a guy that worked at a small firm for 1-2 years - he made it sound like shitlaw, maybe it wasn't...but after that, he got a position at a big national firm. he said part of the advantage of working at a small firm was that he had so much responsibility and learned a lot and that is how he sold it when he interviewed for better positions |

It's REALLY boilerplate. Some of the bigger insurance companies have their own version of "advocate school" which is a week of doing a trial advocacy boot camp replete with common openings and closings.
They have checklists. Like form roggs they send where sometimes they don't even change the captions correctly. They take A LOT of depos. A LOT. They're pretty brutal and everyone hates being at them. EVERYONE.
D bar seems decently friendly, if not VERY overworked. They seem to do pretty big hours. Not Biglaw hours, but 8-6 was the impression I got. Sounds like plaintiffs work without the loony (and at times FUN) clients since their clients are in-house counsel managing their cases.
again, this is heresay from my boss with 25 years doing plaintiffs work. |

He looked at the bottom and said: "you speak fluent spanish?" I said "yup". And he left me in the conference room, 3 minutes later 2 really hot latina chicks walk in, sit down and start talking to me in spanish. we talk a little about this and that as he watches. kinda surreal. they stop and one goes "he's legit". He excuses them and says "can you start on tuesday"
basically, my spanish skills were the plus and he relied on that. Defense side I am POSITIVE is way more professional.
My guess would be to say that you are interested in litigation from "soup to nuts" because that is what you will do. many insurance companies (ultimately your boss) bank on you drawing out litigation to starve the plaintiffs. say LITIGATION LITIGATION LITIGATION. |
