What other state bar did you pass? The most difficult part of California is that it is a 3-day exam (at least for me). So, taking only two days of mind fucking is nice; however, the other peeps on here have a point. The MBE (if you are good at multiple choice) is a great way to provide you with some easy points.
What did you score on the MBE in your previous bar?

NY/CA bro here. i took the 2 day CA exam, and 100% recommend it if you're a good writer.
i'm good at essay exams -- was top 10% at a t14. i had confidence in my ability to write good essays. i know you can pass if you know the basic concepts and analyze them well and write well. i didn't feel like having to memorize a bunch of exceptions for the MBE.
plus, the performance exam is a fucking joke. it's the closest thing on the bar to an IQ test. if you went to a good law school, you're going to do way above the curve on the performance test.
also, the 2 day exam spread over 3 days is a huge break. i went to my hotel pool on the MBE day and swam and then went to the hotel gym, and laughed as the other dweebs came back at 5pm. plus, you don't have fatigue on thursday. you'll do better than everyone else on thursday with the rest day. i felt much more fresh and less fatigued on thursday than i did during day 2 in ny.
good luck, bro.

so im in this predicament right now. 2 months to go before exam.
why'd you feel comfortable taking the atty only exam when the passage rate is ~35%??? im wondering if im making the right decision by only doing essays/MPT.

yeah oops.
maybe skim the convisor for short term memory cramming the weekend before?
i mean if youre a good exam writer, it just comes down to knowing substantive law on what they most likely test. if you do the practice exams, you'll see a pattern of issues that keep coming up.

Huge mistake to take it. If you get a high MBE you guarantee yourself a pass barring horrendous essays. Essays are always a crapshoot and I feel anyone can get the wrong essays and flunk (lately CA bar has been brutal about testing things not located in any Barbri materials).
The multiple choice is also a welcome mental break from the essay days. By comparison, if the essay stress is a 10, multiple choice may be a 3.

Take this into account:
1. There are only 65 days to the bar exam
2. I am working full-time
3. I have a somewhat bad memory
4. In my previous bar exam for another state, I scored a 105 scaled MBE and still managed to pass on the strength of my essays and MPT.
5. In the July 2015 CA exam, 44% of first time takers of the attorney exam passed. Compare that with 58% first time passage rate for non-CA ABA approved school grads. So, while lower, the passage rate for the atty exam isnt THAT much worse. Plus, I wonder how many of these atty takers had sufficient time to study.
Thoughts? My thinking is that I will probably not have sufficient time to master the MBE and essays. And the MBE has been notoriously difficult the last few examinations -- or I'm told, at least. Why not gamble on concentrating on just essays/MPT?
What I'm not clear on yet is what average score I need on the essays and MPT? Is it a 60? 62.5? 70? If anywhere around 65 or above, then I may re-think.

I worked biglaw while taking the cali bar exam and had 2 weeks off to study and passed. My friend was given one week off and passed.
My friend and I started about 50 days early but both had 200 hour months heading into the exam. We passed.
The California bar is not a test of memory, it is a test of mental fortitude. The essays test shit that is literally not in barbri. The failers panic and freeze. The passers just write some logical bullshit on the page.
My friend passed literally having not read 4 subjects, and when those subjects came up on the essays he just made up logical shit.
The secret of this exam is that it is more about test taking skills than actual memory retention.

If you only study for the essays you are not going to study enough of the law and if you get an essay you don't know about you will be fucked.
Not only is the MBE free points assuming you were able to pass previously, studying for the MBE by taking hundreds of practice questions is the best way to relearn the law that you will need to regurgitate on the essays.

essay studying takes 3-4 days. If you arent a retard you know how to write an essay. memorizing the law takes the longest amount of time and you do that by taking MBE questions over and over until you know everything more or less.
There is not need to study at all for the MPT. You've done this before, come on.
Dont push this 60 day flame.
