you're going to dislike this argument, but most conversations irl aren't so concerned with minutiae and proof. and saying things like "most people think X, Y or Z" isn't seen as stupid the way it is on xoxo. xoxo posters don't really like any argument that can't be proved with a link or something, some things are just so and most people just accept that they are. i think this is why i am frustrated on here a lot.
like i said i think of xoxo more as a conversation than a debate and irl conversations you're not constantly being challenged over small points or bitched at for things that aren't really proper debate style but are understood by most people (such as ad hominems). i dont put a lot of effort or thought into things i post here so if its easier to respond with an ad hominem or something thats what ill do. everyone irl understands me well enough. if i'm writing a paper or discussing something academic that deserves serious attention i write differently.
to me, xoxo is like a conversation in passing with a friend. no ones going to say "omg thats a non sequitur what's wrong with you?" or "your appeal to social norms is unfounded! how do you know that most guys wouldn't reject a girl for being 1 year above his cutoff?!?!?" a lot of other posters seem to think of it as a debating contest or academic forum. |

im not a lawyer, im not as detail-oriented and clearly im in the minority. i dont think this makes me worse than anyone else here, but xoxo doesn't really value the intelligence of non-intj types anyway. the board seems to value people who have very exact, detailed and literal ways of thinking and writing. like i said this makes sense for a board full of lawyers. |

i said you "always" say im stupid, not really meaning that you always do it, but that you did it a lot at some point, over that week-2 week period. rather, you said it enough for me to believe that it's a genuine opinion of yours.
i am really lazy wrt how i present things on here so i do stuff like that all the time. ill say "always" to mean "did it a lot in the past" because im sloppy in casual conversation and like to use shorthand to save myself time, even if it's not precise. most people on the board don't do this and i'm always being picked at for stuff like this.
irl the person i was speaking to would just get that i meant that they called me stupid a number of times and didn't literally mean they were constantly doing it. i feel like people use imprecise language a lot and i am particularly guilty of this. i think you guys don't since you are lawyers and you're trained to be detailed and thorough and exact. i once dated a lawyer and he drove me crazy because he would pick apart bits and pieces of things i was saying without responding to the thrust.
anyway this long post wasn't meant to attack you, i just wanted to point out what i think is a difference in communications style between myself and most of the board. |
