The worse off people around you are compared to yuorself, the better you feel about yourself and the happier you are.
Example:
Friend loses job. You feel bad for him/her, but deep down you think "Thank god I have a job, even if it is shit. I'm better off that him/her."
If everyone around you is doing really well, but you are not doing as well, you become less satisfied with life and are not as happy. Even if you are doing just fine. |

For example, I have a couple good friends who founded startups and they look like they could be on their way to eight figure pay days in the next couple of years. Although i will be happy for them, that kinda makes me feel like shit because it reminds me of how much of a risk averse pussy I am....so in some ways I don't want them to hit it too huge for that reason (I guess unless it is so huge that they have megayachts and shit that i can use). I have sometimes secretly hoped they fail out of jealousy, but this really is a beta attitude.
