One dude I know who did this at my HYPS. Took 7 years, though that was also getting a coterminal MA degree. Mostly just spent UG making music and doing drugs. He works as some kind freelance music producer now or something. Seems to do ok for himself.

this is a true story, not flame. I knew a girl that was returning to school as a sophomore while I entered freshman year of college. she was suspended for a year and told to get her act together by taking classes at another school like Rutgers. She returned as a sophomore during my sophomore year (note, by all accounts, she should have been a senior by then, she was so behind on credits she was in between a freshman-sophomore). Anyhow, she ends up kicked out for good. That was 6 years ago and last time I heard from her (10 months ago) she working at a university while taking classes. So it has been a total of 10 years.

I know a guy who is still finishing undergrad, and he started in Fall '04 with me.

He's not particularly bright, but he is a generally easygoing dude and pretty funny. During freshman year, he had an apartment while the rest of us lived in dorms. So he was "that" cool guy, we could go to his apartment and smoke weed and get hammered and blast music, etc. Like all of us, he partied really hard freshman year, missed a lot of classes and didn't get very good grades. But despite this, he still generally seemed well-adjusted and having a good time at it. Unlike the rest of us, however, who toned things down after freshman year, became more responsible academically, and controlled our drinking such that it didn't affect us negatively, he kept at it. I think he was trying to relive the glorious and carefree days of freshman year. Eventually got put on academic probation or failed out or whatever. He would go take classes at community college, then come back to the U for a semester, then repeat. Has been doing it ever since. I think there were a few periods where he wasn't even in school, but told us he was, because he would respond very vaguely to our questions about it.

Yeah, problem is that they didn't realize till it was too late that life is not like the movies, and that a 7th-year senior in real life, as opposed to being big man on campus as hollywood would have us believe, is really just kind of pathetic.

I know a chick who took 7 and is now going to a T20 medical school. She was set to be some poli sci shit head then realized her interest in "health policy" was really an interest in medical school. Spent years 4 and 5 going part time + got a research gig that paid and covered her expenses. Spent years 6, 7 finishing all pre-med preqs and applying.

All in all, she wins @ life.

See, this is one of the few justifiable examples of spending that much time in UG. She didn't realize she wanted to go to med school until a couple years in, and since med school requires all those pre-reqs, she had to tough it out for the extra years. Not the same as people who just suck at school and dick around. Sounds like she has her shit together.

Yes, she was never like a few of my bros who stayed in college for 5-6 years. I get the victory lap, especially at a state U where it's just having fun before getting serious. But a few of them did 6 and I think they had alcohol/sex addictions. They'd take two classes, fuck around all day, and go after college sluts 5 nights a week.

At my BigStateU it was pretty normal to graduate in five, so six or seven wasn't unheard of. The ones I can remember:

1. Guy was a tennis player so he took a reduced courseload his first year and then got kicked out his second year for coke. Came back and finished in seven. The guy always had a 180 personality, he just liked to party too much. He is pretty successful now doing commercial real estate.

2. Kicked out for coke, came back and graduated in six. I think he makes like $60k now two years out selling equipment to golf courses.

3. Rehab for pills/weed. Transferred to a different school. It's been seven years for him and he's been six credits short for the past year. The guy is still a huge pothead and got fired from his job as a waiter. He's your typical smart but lazy dood who can't get past his own laziness. His parents are big time enablers.

4. Lazy/dumb kid. BigStateU was too challenging for him, LOL. He either transferred or got kicked out for academics. Finished in seven years. I think he does office bitchwork now for his uncle's construction company.

I have a friend who joined the military out of high school to help pay for college. He was expecting to only do one month of active service per year during the summer or whatever the requirement used to be. Well, then we started two wars, and three tours in Iraq and one tour in Afghanistan later he ended up taking about 8 years to graduate. Might have been even longer; I'm not sure. The last I heard his plan was to stay in the active-duty military until he can retire with a full pension (which I think happens in his late 30's or something) and then go find some bullshit job that he enjoys. That actually seems pretty credited to me, assuming one is willing to spend most of one's 20's getting shot at in the Middle East.
