Imagine being a lowly TA trying to tell some super entitled super striving freshmen with well connected alumni parents that the kid is going to receive a B- grade in your class. Imagine how much grief that TA expects to suffer by delivering that B- grade in this context.

The students at H/Y are smarter though. You shouldn't be penalized for going to a good school with smart kids.

The fact that the kids at HYP are smarter is why the high average gpa at those schools does not necessarily indicate grade inflation.

However, Latin honors are based on your performance relative to your class. So yes, top 5% for summa is silly.

3.7 in computer science from berkeley or illinois is MUCH more difficult than 3.95 econ at harvard.

basically no one at berkeley/illinois gets 3.7+ from CS because there is a brutal bell curve. at big state schools the professors don't give out A's and A-'s like fucking candy. one of my good friends did EECS and business at berkeley, and he was one of only 2 people in EECS who got 3.7+ his year. and that department is stacked with smart asian strivers.

top 5% at HUG get 3.96+. that's a fucking joke.

pretty sure vast majority of the people in the top 10% are non-stem majors. also, you guys seem to be forgetting that the top 10% at HUG (roughly 160 students) are probably the smartest, most ambitious, and hardest working college students in America.
