Speaking only for myself: I've lived in countries with universal healthcare coverage and the healthcare sucks. Yes it's free and available to everyone. But if you break your arm, for example, you can literally spend 15 hours in the ER before being seen by anyone. The only emergencies that get our idea of emergency treatment are immediate and life threatening. In enormous amounts of pain? It can wait. Making matters worse is that when you are seen by a physician, you're sometimes denied treatment we consider standard, like pain killers during certain procedures. There's actually a large market of private physicians for hire in these countries because the wealthy are willing to pay for it. This also creates a revolving door effect of doctors who want to jump ship from public to private medical practice.
Now, speaking for reptiles in general, it wasn't so long ago that we were seeing news stories of busloads of Canadians coming to the US for treatment because our hospitals and healthcare are superior to theirs. People understand that there's a give-and-take when it comes to free v. pay healthcare. Some reptiles are unwilling to sacrifice good care for universal care, especially since our current (former now, I guess) system allows anyone to receive emergency medical treatment without insurance.
Obviously this doesn't apply to the ACA since that isn't a true universal system, so you can save yourself the time of citing to it in response to this post.

Nobody is saying that if you are having major chest pains and call 911 that you are not going to get treated properly in Canada. It is the remaining 95% of HC issues where the Canadian system is horrible. Anytime you are having acute, but not currently severe, problems that require a specialist you end up waiting 3 months. Anytime you need a scan, you end up waiting 6 months. Walk into a hospital without a 100% life threatening issue? Be prepared to wait 5 hours.
I think this needs to be repeated: I am not suggesting that Canada is better (or worse) than America is right now w/r/t HC. All I am saying is that Uni HC is already similarly as horrible and this is with a smaller society with a lot fewer moochers and more social cohesion.

Greetings,
"Be prepared to wait 5 hours."
Brother, that exact fucking thing happened to me in TX. Went to ER with insane headaches, could barely see straight, couldn't think, nothing. Like cluster headache-level awfulness.
They made me sit in the waiting room for five hours. Finally I got taken in. The nurse took my Bp and it was, shit you not, 200/150. The nurse goes holy fuck, we'll get you a doctor asap.
Didn't get a doctor for another hour.
Then they DIDN'T HAVE FUCKING ROOM IN THE HOSPITAL FOR ME, SO THEY PUT ME ON A GURNEY IN THE FUCKING HALLWAY FORTY FEET FROM THE DOOR THAT OPENS TO THE HELICOPTER AREA, AND IT WAS WINTER AND THE COLD AIR CAME AND FROZE MY GODDAMN BALLS OFF WHILE I LISTENED TO THE ROAR OF THE HELICOPTER ARRIVING AND LEAVING OVER AND OVER AND MY BP WAS 200/150
Finally, after being there for about 7-8 hours, they shot me up with some drugs that made my BP return to normal. They gave me some meds and sent me home.
BTW this town has three hospitals, so it wasn't some buttfuckistan.
Oh yeah, and then they discharged me while I was woozy on Benadryl and shit, could barely walk straight. Had to figure out who to call on my own, could barely dial the phone number, and in my ride home, I couldn't even hold a conversation with the driver.

Brutal bro. Although the facts suggest it is still worse in Canukistan;
"As reported by the Health Council of Canada, a 2010 Commonwealth survey found that 42% of Canadians waited 2 hours or more in the emergency room, vs. 29% in the U.S.; 43% waited 4 weeks or more to see a specialist, vs. 10% in the U.S. "
Can we all just agree that both the corporatist system in America and Uni HC in GB, CAN, etc, both suck and should be rejected?

Greetings,
I've lived in a country w/universal HC coverage and your story does not happen there.
My English friends have routinely called bullshit on this same anecdote, as do my Canadian friends.
I can't speak about anywhere else.

Even now there is some sort of universal healthcare in the emergency room sense.
Universal cadillac plans paid for by the government maybe not

Greetings,
Don't have a GP.
Don't have ID.
Don't have insurance.
Go to the ER for every thing wrong with you.
Give fake name.
Get treated.
Get billed.
Go home.
Throw away bill.
????
Profit!!

If there were universal healthcare, not only would my taxes go up, but my employer would stop providing the excellent coverage I have now.
I would pay more for shittier healthcare. Yes I could still pay for private healthcare but I imagine that would be a lot more expensive and taylored towards rich people, not just employed people.

I dont mind paying a little more in TAXES for a public option of rationed healthcare for people who cant afford it and dont have job (which includes death panels run by statisticians, not doctors).
I do not want to pay a lot more in taxes for a single payer system where I cant get better health care than homeless people unless I double pay for a super expensive private plan, or pay out of pocket.
I've had 4 MRI's in my life and never had to wait more than a week for them. I would like to continue to have that opportunity.

Is this TMF?
The economics of what I'm saying are pretty basic. I don't make 150k, it was a hypothetical number used to illustrate the point. A point you either missed or are choosing to ignore.

It's good for entrepreneurs.
There's nothing socially good about reducing mobility by attaching people to employer-provided health care.
Got a good idea for a business but you also have a sick kid? Well too fucking bad. Keep pumping out TPS reports for ACME Corp.

Vermont is adopting a reasonable single payer option based the effective Taiwanesse system.
The days of pointing to Canada as an example are numbered for better or worse.

and neither is Canada, but that doesn't stop conservatives from using it as an example of why it would be bad here, does it?
Vermont will be a prime state example for a single payer option and most likely the rest of the states in the NE will follow suit. There are plenty of states already considering it.
My main point is that critics won't have to turn to other countries any more to attack socialized medicine.

I'm not sure what the best approach to this whole debacle is but anything that further oppresses the poor, unwashed masses and lowers my premiums at the same time has my vote. Most people aren't really surrounded by poors. They have this vague idea about them informed by television/the news. But when you really get down into the shit with them, when you see them failing to function w/r/t to their health, their kids, money, etc. etc., you just simply throw in the towel and begin to hate them. They are parasitic; they just take and dumbly expect to be taken care of for the most part.
The vast majority of poors are animals and need to be wiped clean off the American boot. Let them eat Doritos and perish.

Because it will only make it a lot more expensive?
Because it will create another unfunded and unsustainable government program that can never be shut down, but will only get more and more expensive over time?
Because it will create yet even more government-enabled rent-seekers happily fucking the people into oblivion forever?
Because the unsustainable spending and taxes will hamper growth and prosperity?
Because people should be free to decide whether or not they want to purchase or have their taxes pay for their extremely expensive health care?
Because people shouldn't receive millions of dollars in free health care just because they cared about their life so little that they chose to become obese and smoke cigarettes?
Etc, etc
