I get that. My question is, if he wasn't the beneficiary on the insurance policy (as the article claims), and if he still owed the balloon payment (not really sure how that works, but again, this is what the article claims), then what's the reason for burning down the house besides screwing the lender?

He was the named beneficiary but the insurance company paid the lender because that's what happen under the policy with an intentional loss.

Even before the loss had been established as intentional both the article and the Marin himself were saying that he wasn't the beneficiary.

"As for the State Farm insurance policy on the house, land, and contents, the lender, not Marin, stood to collect more than $2 million for the damage to the structure and the home's "built-ins" — entertainment centers, wall cabinets, and other pre-existing items.

Michael Marin could have collected up to $1 million in insurance for the contents. But surprisingly, he didn't have nearly that much of value at 71 Biltmore Estates when it burned."

"To hammer that point home about my finances," Marin told New Times, "the biggest thing in front of me was the one-year, interest-only balloon payment. I had a $2.3 million bill to pay. So I refinance or sell or I am totally screwed. If I were to burn it, that's slitting my own throat. I lose everything."

Bankers are dangerous to society on Jun 29, 1:40 PM said:

@adegiulio:

Bankers are so psychotically obsessed with money and will go to the extreme as life or death.

Can't pay for your mortgage and house underwater? No choice but to burn it all and collect insurance.

get caught? its all over, commit suicide.

after the massive Wall Street panic in October of 1907 “bankers, brokers, and officials of companies” was at the top of the list, with twice the average rate of suicide. Money is so ingrained into their existence that is all that matters to them. Just like in the great depression, the bankers greed killed not only the economy, but also themselves. It was a giant financial crisis caused by reckless psychotic bankers. Seems like we may have the same conditions today.

I hope more bankers will seek mental health after seeing this video. They are dangerous to themselves and society.

They carry less risk. No need to jump out a window when you aren't actually going to go broke.

because the equivalence at issue is of the seriousness of the offenses and the punishments. obviously he was not charged with any sort of homicide. arson of an occupied building is a very serious crime in just about every state.
