loans for undergrads are capped at about $22K for 4 years. add another $4.5K if you went for 5 years.

this is why that $25K average student loan debt figure is such bullshit.

edit: to answer your question, i borrowed $22K myself and my parents borrowed another $100K with parent plus, which eventually i ended up paying too. law school was another $200K.

never did any homework ever. like those 5 paragraph essays they'd give you a month to write? i just wouldn't do them. ditched a lot. when my absences started to become a problem, i got my mom to write me notes saying i was sick by telling her that i wouldn't graduate unless she did it. my parents always threatened to ground me because of my bad grades but they never actually did it. instead they gave me a car and lots of spending money.

i fucked around in college and law school too. through some form of luck i was top 10% and law review after 1L. bam, biglaw. screwed around 2L and 3L, still managed to graduate top 10% though. turns out biglaw requires actual work and i fucked that up. their arduous screening process did not catch me ha ha.

we got GPA bumps for taking ap classes. in retrospect, i think my gpa might have been a 5.3. but my non-bumped gpa was a 4.0. getting a 4.0 in high school requires doing a few problem sets a day and studying 2-3 hours before exams.

Back in my day tuition was only like 4.5k a year. I got a Grant cause my parents faked their tax returns to look poorer, and I also got a Pell Grant. This more than covered tuition.

Since my parents were such cheap asshole bastards though, they still made me take out full Stafford loans. So those faggots paid ZERO cents and I actually graduated with like maybe 15k or something in debt for a shit degree.

At the university level, there's no limit to the amount of need-based aid one can receive--well, the limit is tuition+room+board, but one may in addition receive stipends for travel or low-/no-paying internships.

ug cost around $7000 all in -- cheap state school, scholarships, parents' contribution was to let me live in the basement (no hot pockets or sock-fucking though), no debt b/c i had a fairly decent jorb b/c of skills i'd picked up in HS (no, not sucking dick, that was for free)

ls cost around $180k all in; after scholarships and living expenses, total debt is around $150k

sadly, i managed to fuck my own ass by making $60k for a year before law school -- no poverty grants for me

fwiw i worked during ls too (lsat/gmat tutoring)

if your family was able to give you a head start in your career, good for you... most people in are country have no idea that (e.g.) poors can go to ivies for free
