PMBR estimates that your actual MBE score will be 36 points higher than your PMBR raw score. Any truth to this? Care to comment?

Also, they said that a 95 raw on the PMBR practice exam is the average score. How can they tell if they did not collect answer sheets from the participats of the 3-day seminar? Seems like it was only based on past statistics.

Comments?

I have heard that there are eerie similarities between your PMBR scaled score and the actual MBE score.

I think that one who reviews the correct responses will perform substantially better on the actual bar, because a lot of the questions discussed on the simulated exam were at the margin - testing the exception to the exception. For one, I didn't know about the efficacy of a life tenant removing trade fixtures in the course of good husbandry. I do now, though.

You mean PMBR scaled score = actual MBE raw score?

Is it a generally accepted view that PMBR questions are tougher than actual MBE questions? And for that matter, tougher than BARBRI questions?

Yes, yes, and yes.

I have heard that the PMBR questions are a bit more difficult, while BarBri are easier.

How did you do on PMBR? My raw score and percentile dropped from BarBri, but my scaled improved.

My PMBR raw score was higher than my Barbri score but only by a couple or so more points. If PMBR is indeed higher, then this should suggest that I am improving. In any case, my scores are higher than average but not enough for me to relax. :)

How many PMBR questions do you do in a row, say for the blue book, before stopping and checking your answers? The book recommends doing 50 but that seems kind of high. I usually do 25 in a row and average around 17-21 correct with crim being the low-end and con law the high-end.

I did not do PMBR questions before I took the PMBR exam. I only did BarBri in sets of 33 or 34, as per the BarBri Paced Program.

I wouldnt worry about how many you're doing, because you're way above passing on the MBE with 17-21 out of 25.

If you score on the low end (17 = 68%) you're looking at a scaled score of 140-150.

A little of both honestly. Some of the answer choices are so slightly different its a coin toss...other questions are "What the Eff?"

Then there are some you can do in your sleep.

I believe the average is like 95 or something so I guess anything above that puts you into the pass zone...maybe not with flying colors but P for pass baby.

I also have not done many questions...With the BarBri Simulated MBE maybe I have done like 400.

I think they have some new questions each year, but the tests aren't entirely new. Our guy kept saying that so and so was a new question this year.

As for what they test on, I don't think they have any special information. They take the most heavily tested areas and have people create really nitpicky questions in those areas. They also seemed to test different aspects of the same or related rules.

114 PMBR & 136 barbri - can i throw my red book and mpq in the garbage?

assuming i can repeat on the 30th and pull ~150, can i skip the MPT and spend the full 3 hours on those last 2 NY essays? (and still pass)

this is a legit ques

are you taking NY?

seriously, if you're able to do this well, what are the scores you need on the MPT and essays to reach the great, GLORIOUS P?

yeah NY and NJ... i'd love to know what i need on that MPT cuz i've done shit for it and i'm not really stoked about writing a close universe memo in 90 minutes – generally, I like to actually think and digest the subject matter before I write any sort of work product (which this part of the exam is supposedly testing)…

I’m pretty sure I’d get fired day 1 if I spent only 90 minutes writing my judge a bench memo.

Delaware is one of probably the other few states that have a serious Bankruptcy Practice at all. That is probably not a real indicator. But the way the Economy is going right now I would kinda suprised if nothing pretty decent rolled our way.

NYC (class all by itself...it is mecca for Bankruptcy)

Then probably

Chicago/Delaware

L.A. / Houston/Dallas Ft. Worth

Atlanta.

Any more?

I know I almost feel guilty cheering on the recession but the downturn in the US economy is primarily what led me to look into bankruptcy, that and an awesome BK professor that made the code look easy… regardless after my stint in the south clerking I intend to head back to the big apple where I anticipate bankruptcy practice will boom in the foreseeable future as housing crisis ripples through the economy. As liquidly dries, DIP financing will become the new source of financing for flailing corporate America…

this may seem like a gloomy outlook but only time will tell...

It's not necessarily economic ambulance chasing. Massive Chapter 11s are becoming the thing of the past. The future of consensual out of court restructuring is extremely bright, given the general amount of leverage out on most companies now.

I'm going transactional but I have a theory that the future of M&A is going to be largely intertwined with BK as more and more acquisitions are debt-based

I've heard that to be a good Bankruptcy attorney (obviously we are talking the big guys here) you have to have balls of steal.

You bring up an excellent point about M&A possibly being intertwined with BK. That would be interesting. (and probably the way of it for a little while)

As for the review classes. If you don't have a basic understanding of the law and get decent scores on practice MBE's then your time would be better spent reviewing basic stuff. The class is more for the advanced questions.

But to each their own

You had the first day of the class today right? Was it worth going to? I'm torn. Got a 108 on the test, not great, but not terrible either. Thing is, I think a lot of the questions I missed wasn't because I didn't know the law, it was just that I got tricked by some dick move they pulled, or it was just a really obscure topic. I kind of feel like doing state stuff might be more beneficial than learning about trade fixtures etc (which I can just look up in the conviser). What do you think?

To each there own. A 108 is a fine score and you probably don't need too much more help. Im in your same boat about knowing the law but getting tripped up on something stupid. It does help going through the questions very carefully and really keep an eye out for how they can trip you.

As I said...to each their own. If you are weak in state law right now, then I would probably say study that. If you are comfortable with everything and are just looking to fine tune, then maybe the review course would be good for you. It is my understanding that you will get more points by picking the low hanging fruit on the tree than you will going way high up with some deep understanding.

I got a 105 as well. (I haven't studied much MBE since the BarBri simulated exam.)

I just finished up the review sessions. The review sessions are good for advanced review. It seems by your score that you are ready for some really nit picky tricks and trips the MBE can throw at you. I would advise anybody under a 90 to review more basic law.

Its hard to sit there for 2 days all day when you know you have a mountian of state law to tackle (and if you are really behind then maybe you should just study state law because with an MBE score over 100 you are going to do well enough on the MBE...at least I hope).

Its your call looking at what you need. There is no silver bullett here.

I got a 117 today. Earlier I got a score of 138 for Bar Bri. I hadn't been doing any PMBR questions and I guess there you go...

I plan on going to the review sessions. I think that at this point, that is going to be the last MBE stuff I do *besides two mid week 100Q's in the PMBR blue book* and I think its worth my time - if only so that in test day I can remember 3-4 helpful things, that may be all I need.

Also, I figure I am going to be doing an absurd amount of state - law cramming, so it might be easier to switch it up with a live lecture.

In any case, the average today was a 95. IF you get in the top 50% on the bar exam you are more than fine. It said to add something like 36 points, and I believe it. So it sounds like everyone on this board at least is doing fine. I overheard a few girls talk about how they were "in the game" with mid-90's bar bri exam a few weeks back - that is our competition.

should i bother taking the simulated exam in the mpq2? if my score drops again, i'm afraid i'll just freak myself out.

109 on pmbr 3 day and bar bri in class

PMBR 3 day was in no way indicative of my performance either.

152 raw on barbri simulated

97 raw on PMBR 3 day

158 raw actual bar

PMBR 3 day only tests useless stuff that has little chance of actually being on the bar. The PMBR bluebook was pretty good though.
