Because they share consciousness up to the point they are split and cloned, the resulting living HJ does not know if the clone will be "him" but killing himself each time is the ultimate sacrifice.
Similar to downloading your consciousness into an AI to live forever maybe. Will the AI think there was an unbroken continuation of consciousness? Maybe. But the consciousness in you still dies and YOU don't get to continue. |
