You probably can't make 20% a year over the long term. Get an index fund and get on with your life.

just swing trade bro. once you understand how individual equities move you can practically print money as long as you are patient, disciplined and follow the right stocks.

for instance, gogo is the company that has a virtual monopoly on the business of wifi on airplanes. they went public about a year ago and had an amazing earnings report recently that saw their stock skyrocket. but it has been under selling pressure because of a recent lockup expiration. it's at a short-term low with solid support immediately below in the 23-24 range. should jump back up to 27 or so and maybe test 30 again. will almost certainly go explosively higher int he coming days.

brother its incredibly easy to figure this out. you just need to study markets and charts for a while. you wont know for sure which way they will go but you will be able to spot places of resistance and support that will let you minimize risk and maximize potential gain.

edit - for instance, look at this daily chart of gogo. notice after it gapped up above 20 it hasnt come close to taht level since. in fact, it always bounces at around the 23 area. what does that tell you? that the market knows for sure this company is worth at least $23/share and likely much more.

http://elite.finviz.com/chart.ashx?t=GOGO&ty=c&ta=0&p=d&s=l

edit - of course, if the price were to ever breach that level of support, it means it's time to sell sell sell.

okay. APPL made a perfect pocket pivot move off of a bullish channel on tuesday. it is set up for a run to 580 and then 600.

http://elite.finviz.com/chart.ashx?t=AAPL&ty=c&ta=0&p=d&s=l

lnkd is at a long-term support level. it too will probably start getting bought up again soon.

http://elite.finviz.com/chart.ashx?t=LNKD&ty=c&ta=0&p=w&s=l

soda has a phenomenal peg ratio and is invested in by lots of high quality funds. it's had a recent sell-off but i think its largely because of tax loss selling. it's at a very strong support level (protip: prior resistance becomes support). watching it closely for signs of life.

http://elite.finviz.com/chart.ashx?t=SODA&ty=c&ta=0&p=w&s=l

trla bottomed recently and has been moving explosively higher in recent market sessions. look for it to reach 50 soon.

http://elite.finviz.com/chart.ashx?t=TRLA&ty=c&ta=0&p=d&s=l

other stocks like trla that are high-growth momenteum stocks that recently endured a sell-off are blox and gimo.

pbpb is also at a long-term bottom. as soon as it sees signs of life, i am in.

http://elite.finviz.com/chart.ashx?t=PBPB&ty=c&ta=0&p=d&s=l

yhoo will almost certainly double this year because of the upcoming alibaba ipo.

bidu is the google of china and has momenteum. i like it to triple this year.

amzn and goog will just keep chugging higher this year. they are effectively monopolies in their particular industries. same with ma and v (oligopolies).

some biotech/medical names that are flagging and may make enormous moves in short order are enta, rlyp, epzm, omed, kpti and enzy.

almost enough to balance out with the LNKD loss. don't just cherry pick. you gave a whole portfolio of stocks, and that port is getting smoked today, though in all fairness, so is the market as a whole.

Investing isn't really about complicated math. Have you ever had a friend who had really good taste in music and always knew about bands that would eventually become popular back when they were still indie outfits? Good investors have more in common with that kind of dude than with an engineer. Of course you do need to know how to read balance sheets but it's mostly just about recognizing a group of people that have their shit together when you see it.

diversification with a bunch of shit is no good. for example, if the US stock market is a huge fucking bubble, putting most of your money into a US index might not be smart in 2014.

It's pretty obvious that to invest successfully, your investments need to be good. That's like saying to be healthy you need to eat well and exercise. What successful investors advocate is diversifying in addition to using sound logic for each individual pick, as a hedge against uncertainty.

The U.S. is still pretty good, but looking at other countries is obviously a good idea. The Australian stock market has delivered better returns historically for example, and while historical trends don't dictate the future, the fundamentals that made that trend happen still seem to be present (i.e. they're still rich in natural resources).

buy VASGX (Vanguard) or FFNOX (Fidelity). buy the same amount each month. don't touch it for 20 years or longer. it's that simple.

The hurdles I use are understanding the business and the balance sheet/fundamentals being there.

Index funds and bonds are probably 10X better over the long term if you can tolerate periods of drawdowns.

this, 99% of people simply dont have the TIME to study this shit on a fundamental level; and even if they did, people who get paid to do this for a living understand it better

cr. i don't understand why the average idiot thinks he can beat the market -- or beat a managed fund. i'm sure some individuals are good stockpickers, but recommending others to do so doesn't seem like a good idea.
