1. not having to worry about people thinking i'm a criminal and/or racially profiled. one anecdote in particular to illustrate this. a while back when i was looking for my first job out of school i had an interview at a place in the fucking suburbs. the interviewer told me that it's within "walking" distance from the train station, but once i left the train, i realized that it was like fucking 2 miles away. this was a weekday afternoon with no one around. i was running late. then a middle-aged white woman driving a SUV sees me and asks me if i need help. i told her my situation, and she offered me a ride. granted, i was wearing a suit, but i do wonder if that would have happened if i were black. my instinct is to say no.
2. not having to worry about people questioning my credentials or thinking i got into elite schools because of affirmative action. |
