well if you have kids then forget about the fantasy.
A spouse is even better because she can work while you retire.
I told my gf that IF we dont have kids, our relationship deal is as such: we are each responsible for bringing $1.5-2 million into the relationship, whether this be through work, inheritance, lottery, whatever.
I should be able to have $1.5 million saved soon after turning 40.
Once that is done, I fucking retire and live a life of leisure, taking modest trips and driving a modest car. Forget about buying some expensive striver house.
She still has to work making $120K and supporting us. Her income plus my savings should be plenty for people without kids. I may or may not go solo or do some part time shitjob to make $60K if I get bored with snowboarding and fishing. If she makes more money or inherits it, then we can both live a life of leisure.
Doesn't this sound 100X better than striving for a house and paying for shitty kids to go to shitty private schools forever?

that's enough money to go skiing and take trips with your friends and prole trips with your family.
I dont have any RSF friends who go to Bali all the time, so I dont need to worry about keeping up with people who are obscenely rich.
Most of my friends are biglaw level upper middle class, so the difference between them working forever and me retiring is the $1.5 million house they buy and putting 2-3 kids through private school for 20 years.

Pretty much.
That's liquid, investments, and retirements.
It doesn't include tangible assets that could be liquidated if the need arose (cars, home theater setup, wife's rings).

Why are you marrying a dood who has only $100k to his name?
Do you have a mortgage on your property and are you counting that against your net worth? Usually people want to know what you have liquid, and houses don't count unless you own it or have a shitload of equity.
Also if you're counting 401k you gotta give that a 30% haircut at least for taxes.

I have about the same as you and I'm younger than your fiancee. $100k at 29 is not a lot for someone with a professional job, sorry. That's like maxing 401k with minimal growth over 5 years.
Money is a big deal in marriages. You two seem to have really different priorities regarding it and a 29 year old guy with little money marrying a 33 year old women with a lot sounds like a recipe for disaster. Most men do not cope well with making less than their wives, and the wives usually berate or look down on them for it. Is this the guy who requires permission to cum?
Best of luck.

i don't even know how the "permission to cum" meme evolved, but it's obviously laughable.
relationships are hard and i would never pretend everything is perfect, but money is one thing we see 100% eye to eye on and not something we ever fight about. he's not insecure and thinks it's fucking awesome that i make most of the money and i have massive amounts of respect for him despite the fact that he'll prob never make more than $150k/year in his lifetime.
thanks for your feigned concern though.

i make too much money to not work. management wants me here long term, so they will work w/ me at least earlier on if i want a flex work schedule (9-2pm, one day off are some of the things other mothers do). the nice thing is that my company is very family friendly, unlike a law firm.
my mom is moving here and is going to help out with childcare and hubby works from home about 2-3 days/week. the flexibility of his job to work from home is really the main benefit.
the plan is actually to buy in a school district where i can send my kids to public school. my condo is so cheap that we only pay $1800/month all in and i can have one kid here and save up enough to eventually buy something in the $1.5-2M range in 3-5 years.

junior associate
-80k (damn student loans)
the only way im ever going to be rich is to marry rich. my s/o is likely going to inherit 30 times more than i could make in 10 years in biglaw.

This thread makes me sad.
I know 20 rich kids inheriting many more millions than we will ever make even though we slave away in biglaw. 1 million to them is peanuts even though it'd take us years to save.
