But I think its well known that work/life balance (or lack thereof) is a huge problem in the legal profession - especially if one aspires to work BIGLAW. And its very rough on relationships, no doubt about it.
Regardless, its all about what you want to do in your life. I don't know of any jobs that pays what BIGLAW pays to employees in their mid-20s. I'm also able to make that kind of money in a profession that actually interests me, so I think its a great deal. Could I have become an IT worker and had more time? Yeah, possibly. Though my mom is in IT and works 60+ hours a week because she's afraid of losing her job, and I'll outearn her in year 1 of BIGLAW (she has over 25 years of experience). Moral of the story - know what you're getting yourself into. Personally, I knew this was tough before going in, so I'm not surprised nor do I regret it.
As for people that think "eh, I'm special, I can sit on my ass and make $150K/year!", you're kidding yourself. |

I remember my legal writing professor threatening to fail me when I once told him, "Look bud, I'm married. My goal is to do as little as possible at LS while still maintaining median grades, so that I have as much time as possible to spend with my wife."
He responded, with a straight face, "Law school should be your first priority."

In response to the rest:
There are plenty of professions where a smart and capable 25 y/o can make 100K, which, without loans, is close enough to 125K. I know contractors, construction workers, franchise-owners, consultants, accountants, and a few others who make that much.
Further, going to a top LS (other than possibly HYS) is no guarantee of making 125K, as you're seeing. Even if one does, they may actually come down in income after that...
In any event, I've got to work on my XOXO/Life balance and go pay attention to my wife. |

Pretty much everyone is trying hard to be at the top (at least, this was true in my 1L section), and most people at your law school (assuming its a T14) takes being at the top of the class as a given.
