Depends on what kind of shape it's in. But docking isn't that expensive and it's usually by the foot. You can always just pull into transient boat parking in a marina, let harbor master know you're there temporarily. Go explore a bit, get groceries, head back to boat go out aways and drop the hook (weather permitting).

Maintenance isn't that expensive, assuming you didn't get a lemon. You'll always be cleaning, lubricating etc., but it's not that expensive (again... assuming nothing major wrong).

Stupid question #1

Where do sailboats store the zodiac/dinghy and small outboard when they're traveling long distances?

A few moar:

As a single dood, did you enjoy living on your little sailboat? What length was it? Did you get it out of the marina much?

Any recommendations for an affordable "blue water" boat to singlehand around the world for less than 100k?

carrying a dingy is awkward on a small boat. larger boats have davits, but smaller ones you would have to deflate the zodiac and store it for long hauls. for under 100 k you can easily find a 30-35 foot mid displacement boat from the 1980-90s thats in good shape, well equipped and from a reputable builder

im an experienced sailor but not a world traveler. there is no perfect boat and unless you are buying new, condition and equipment are really a big deal. If you have not sailed I would try to get a spot on a boat in a cruising rally to get an idea of the life. The Baha Haha leaves San Diego in 2 weeks and is the biggest cruisers rally on the west coast.

j boats are good, butthere are many cheaper and slightly heavier displacement boats. if you are going to start out in the PNW you will want a boat that handles rough seas. if you are really going to run away the best bet is to buy from someone who is giving up your dream. there are many already equipped boats around the world that have been abandoned by dreamers returning to the real world. well equipped cruising boats can be had for a bargain in the right places. keep your mind open but look at the cruising classics. C&C landfall 38, Cal 39, sabre 36, bristol 40. also compare/contrast heavy and lighter displacement boats. solid/light & roomy

I like C&C because they are fast& well built with 6'4+ headroom. This boat is made with a balsa core which can cause serious structural issues though so always get a thorough survey. That boat is also not equipped for real offshore work. You could spend 100k on equipment so it is cheaper to find one well equipped

Thanks for the info. I'm looking at a local CSY 37' that looks interesting. Supposedly sails like crap according to reviews (I wouldn't know). I guess it was used for bareback chartering in the Caribbean. I don't know what that is, but I want to find out.

I read this and thought it was interesting. A lot more than I'm willing to take on, but interesting, nonetheless.

I never traveled long distances, but normally the marina will send out a dinghy for you.

My boat was a 26 foot Macgregor and I did enjoy living on it. I took it out for sails at least once a month. Lots of overnighters in Catalina.

I have no idea bout sailing around the world. Was way too dangerous for me to ever contemplate.

I can fix anything on a boat. 100 GT Near Coastal USCG Captain's license here bro.

The sailing, rigging can be learned fairly quickly, I would suspect.

I really think you should spend extensive time getting to know your new boat before you put out to sea man. This is a really serious undertaking and we don't want you to die.

TY bro.

I'll be learning it for a year before departure. I'll probably live aboard once home sells.

OK, y'all.

Was just approved to buy my first sailboat. A 1978 39'Sloop. 25K

Will cost about 1K for the survey, but the owner tells me (and he seems honest, but I'll 'trust but verify'), that I'll never find another boat like this. He is the second owner and planned to circumnavigate the world. He has already done the all of the nasty work on the boat. Doesn't want to sell her because he waited too long to follow his dream. He's a retired Boeing Engineer. The boat has just been re-rigged with all lines run aft. No leaks on boat.

Really curious what surveyor tells me in his report.

He says that for another 20K, the boat will be ready for a circumnavigation.

Needs:

* $ 3,000 New high end autohelm

* $ 4,500-5K Cape Horn windvane

* $ 500 Epirb

* $ 2,500 Liferaft

* $10,000 In other Miscellaneous repairs and parts.

Who is the maker?? What was the sale price? Hopefully you negotiated the shit out of the price.

It is an Ericson 39B. Still in negotiations. I'm not going to make any offer until the survey is done. It's been repowered with a Perkins 4 108 with 800 hours on it.

Odd order of events. Usually you agree on a contract that is subject to the survey, then renegotiate the price based on the survey if they find anything.

I know... seller is desperate. Started out asking 42,500 in February. I'm playing a different angle. Right now, I'm going with asking price, contingent on what surveyor finds. I've never seen the boat, know the guy is in a jam, and can pretty much back out and negotiate whatever I want once survey comes in at.

Thanks t-rump.

Was hoping you'd chime in.

Based on all the research I've done, this rig has a lot of what cruising people are looking for. It's fairly cheap, really affordable slip fees ($315/mo) and I could live aboard while I learn to sail. Lots of other boats I could crew for and learn from in the area.

If the guy has really invested a lot of money and time in this it could be a very solid choice. make sure you get a good survey.

Me too, bro.

I've been learning a lot watching YouTube vids.

My plan is to never return to US. Hang out in s. Pacific islands for a few years, then go ashore in NZ and meet and Marty a kiwi girl. Never pay back student loans.
