I've been to several events there. Girls LOVE it. Huge chick magnet seriously. They eat that ish up and post a dozen pictures on their instagram about their "prestigious and highly sophisticated" night out at the H-club.
Me: "Hey, why don't we eat at the Harvard Club, you've never been right?"
Girl: "Wow so prestigious! I KNEW I made the right choice coming to NYC to meet prestigious men like you!"
If playing squash or swimming is your thing, and you don't have access to the New York Athletic Club or University Club, your ugrad club access is critical.
Membership is also clutch if you want access to high-end clubs/societies overseas as they mostly will reciprocate membership. Nothing like being the new guy in town in some foreign city and taking foreigners to places even they don't have access to. They'll cream their pants.
TBF it's drab inside and a bit nauseauting to be honest. |

I'd say at least half of the young people who go to events at the museums are people who went to 2nd tier universities and most of them are from the midwest or the south or some ish like that. It's basically a more upscale version of the 230 Fifth crowd. That being said, museums do host more exclusive events that you typically cannot get invited to unless you are a member or guest of a specific society or club. But like I said, most museum events are fairly open and full of UMC strivers.
Minority status: quite diverse, lots of Eastern Europeans (think Romanian, Ukrainian, etc.) and Latinos/Latinas, lots of Indians and Asians. Expect to see lots of people who think "black tie" means literally wearing a black tie and black suit ("bubut I went to Harvard Business School!"). Mostly striverish gold-diggers.
2) The "Arts" I'm not sure what you mean by "events at NYCB." NYCB/ABT each have their own "young sponsors" or equivalent society that you can join (with money), and basically you hang out with other white people and begin your journey as a patron of the arts. I did this and it was pretty 180 - you get to meet the dancers, go to some pretty cool private parties hosted by the artistic director, etc. Carnegie Hall and others have similar "young patron" societies, but NYCB/ABT was the credit choice.
Minority status: almost exclusively white. People are open, friendly and welcoming as long as you are a balletomane (if you don't know what this means don't even try signing up)
3) Charities If you're a true prestige/status whore, this is what you need to focus on. Now there's a billion charities in the city, you need to figure out what the "prestigious" ones are FOR YOUR AGE GROUP, and it's quite obvious what they are if you're in the know. If you show up to the wrong charity, have fun being surrounded by 40/50 year olds. There are legit good charities that are basically "training program" for the next generation of charity leaders, and these are filled with mostly girls in their 20s/30s. The bad news is, these are dominated by boarding school graduates. And I don't mean "Brewster" or "Medeira." I'm talking about Choate, Dalton, Andover. It doesn't matter if you went to Yale, if you're from a public high school, you just won't fit in unless you were on the sailing team at Yale or did equesterian in high school (I'm being serious) or ski/tennis team or something like that. One thing we used to do regularly with this one charity I was involved in was sailing trips. Squash was also commonly played, and we would rotate venues between the various club memberships that we had. It was pretty 180 and this way we got access to facilities we never would have had on our own.
Minority status: almost exclusively white, people are aloof and blind to the real world. Feels a bit like high school.

Definitely didn't go to private school, squash, Yale - however I am sure my net worth is higher than *some* of these people and their families. I'd like t increase said wealth and wish to build my network.
Does any actual business/deals go on here or is it just people "aloof to the real word?" I don't mind about the "not fitting in part". If there is business to be made, or money to be had - I'll find a way to get it.

ABT dancers are more open about different styles so the dancers go to open classes quite often and are actually encouraged to do so in the off-season (which is most of the year). I used to see Yuriko and David Hallberg in class regularly, not to mention the no-name studio dancers. If you don't know what I just said, probably not a good idea to join ABT Young Patrons as people will view you as a creep just to meet the ladies :)
Quickest way to meet women from boarding schools? Don't you have any friends from college or law school who attended? If you do, suddenly be friendly and ask to hang out with them when they're out with their friends.
If lacking women, then try the guys (although the guys generally don't hang out with their HS girls as often). If lacking guys, well your basically SOL unless you get lucky and meet one at a bar I guess.
You could also hail mary and crash charity events that your friends are attending and hope it's not some lame thing to benefit Homeless Dogs of Brookyln or Queens AIDs relief or something like that...
The key with charity events is understanding that it's a circuit. You don't just go to "one" charity and go to just that one charity's events. The ladies who form the leadership of these charities all travel around in the same circle and go to each others' charity events, and invite their guests who are typically from the same pool of people each time. Basically the end game is to be at a point where you have maybe 2-3 different charity invites a month. It gets old quick but hey some people like that crowd. Some of these events are at cool places that I would normally go to, like in Soho or the Village, but a lot of times be prepared to saddle up to the Waldorf Astoria or some other stuffy hotel lounge/banquet center.
I got sucked in because I was friends with people from [X boarding school] and when they started getting super involved in the charity scene they would invite me and some other dudes from my HS since we were pretty generous with donations (we're not talking thousands of dollars btw, not THAT generous). And it just snowballed from there. You only really need one in, and if you make a good impression you're basically on everyone's invite list to get money. The funny thing is, people REALLY cared a lot more about where I went to HS than college. If I mentioned HYP, they'd be like "oh nice" but mention boarding school and it's like "ohhhhhh my best friend went there!!!" or "ohhhh that's where my third cousin goes RIGHT NOW!" It's lulzy. Probably due to the fact that a lot of questionnable proles go to top ugrads and are everywhere in the city.
You're also spending a lot of money to hang out with women who are wealthy but uglier than the random Parsons girl you could meet hanging out in some dive in the LES. You have to realize, the purpose of these charities is for the women to feel good about themselves and/or power trip, not to meet dudes. |

Other clubs that have a strong social community are the NYAC, ULC, and the University Club. Colony Club for women.
I'd say that membership is mostly white at these clubs, but among the under-40 set things are pretty diverse. NYAC was traditionally Irish (and, to a lesser degree, Italian) and ULC was (and in many ways still is) rather Republican.
For the under-40 crowd, there are about equal numbers of men and women. It's still mainly white and Protestant, but for every kid who went to Choate there's another kid who went to, say, Grosse Pointe High. These clubs understand that to survive they need to make money, and limiting to the sons and daughters of the "old guard" is detrimental to camaraderie and fun.
Some clubs are still very old-school: if you aren't from UES waspy "society", the fossils at the Colony Club will never let you forget it, but lack of "pedigree" will not affect your ability to actually get into the club if you're otherwise well-liked and well-behaved.
As for the museum events, every museum or cultural institution will hold a few events a year that EVERYONE can buy tickets to. I agree with the poaster above in his assessment that there's a lot of riffraff at these events.
What you want to do is join the Young Fellows / Young Patrons: this will set you back $500-$1,000, but you get access to more exclusive events (i.e. riffraff not invited) and the cost of joining will price out a lot of the undesirables. Membership is considerably more diverse.
Reciprocity is also a big deal. If you're a member of one of the above clubs, you have reciprocity (i.e. can use the facilities of) any number of clubs around the world. Staying in the guest rooms at one of these clubs can be significantly cheaper than staying in a hotel, and these clubs are often in a desirable or convenient part of town.
You will find insufferable UMC strivers and genuinely cool people and everyone in-between at these places. The worst offenders are guests (and especially guests of guests), but some members can get striverish. The NYAC in particular can sometimes feel like a giant Irish pub with a gym attached to the side, and not too long ago there was apparently a fistfight there. |

But if you pick one or two and make the effort to be active (and also, if you pick a club that's a true social club as opposed to a nice venue for your daughters to get married in and for you to bring potential clients), you can really create for yourself that sense of community which a lot of people on XO claim that NYC lacks.
I know a lot of people who have joined 1 or 2 clubs / Young Patrons groups / charities and that's transformed their NYC experience. They don't feel as much of a "rootless cosmopolitan", as people here tend to say.
NYAC's location is 180. I also like the Metropolitan Club and its rooftop bar, but the NYAC is more fun. Especially on St. Patrick's Day.
As for the girls, I always thought that the museum and charity events were a good way for men to meet women. I bring my single male friends there and they're always impressed with the talent. As for the clubs, it's a mixed bag and events can be a bit of a sausage fest with the exception of maybe some of their open-invitation Kentucky Derby parties, but the girls at those Derby parties are SPS and 120 (unsophisticated, cheap). |

All of these clubs have dress code, and many clubs have a more lax weekend dress code. While you can't roll into any of these clubs wearing running shoes and torn jeans, you can often be more casually presented on weekends than during the work week.
If you really were a member of these clubs then you'd know this. |
