I did a court internship. Not my first choice, but I didn't get a firm job and didn't start looking for government stuff early enough. It was a reasonably good experience - gave me some exposure to legal writing in a professional context and made me realize that I never, ever wanted to be a litigator.

I didn't start until February-March, and a lot of the good stuff was snapped up by then. I think that if you haven't gotten a firm job yet, you should probably start doing a non-firm job search as well. If worst comes to worst, you get a firm job and a non-firm job and tell the non-firm job no thanks.

I just took BarBri, since my firm was paying for it and it was what everyone else was doing. I don't know anyone who took a different course, so I can't say anything about others. BarBri was fine, though in retrospect I wish I'd studied a bit harder during the beginning of the summer so that the end wasn't so miserable.

I think that it's important that you know the basic facts about the school - what its strengths are, what it likes to brag about, why you think you'd be a good fit there.

By no means should you feel required to know exactly what classes you want to take or what kind of law you want to practice. Frankly, I kind of roll my eyes a bit at people who try to pretend that they know exactly what they want to study and practice (with the exception of people who have significant pre-law school experience, like the IP folks). You haven't had significant exposure to law yet and it doesn't sound like you've been doing legal work. Expecting you to know what you're drawn to and what you're most suited for is a little ridiculous. Have some ideas of things that sound interesting, but don't feel pressured to commit.

Big picture: He almost always picks what we do in the evenings. We have different interpretations of why this happens.

I'm usually fine with it, as long as he remembers to feed me. I enjoy most things, but don't like being hungry.

His interpretation of things is that I don't ever offer suggestions and that he doesn't actually like doing all the planning (though he admits he sometimes overreacts when he doesn't like what I pick). I think we agreed that I'd be a little more assertive about saying what I want, and that he'd try to refrain from bitching if I pick something he dislikes.

I am pretty sure I want to go. However, having the kid makes me realize I really do not want and could not handle biglaw type hours, which makes me wary of incurring all the debt.

Also I'm trying to decide if it would be better to go now - and if so, full or part time - or if I should have another kid soon and wait until they're both in school.

Given the information in the first paragraph, it sounds like you should go at some point, but make sure it's to a school where you get merit money. As I remember, you have high numbers, so I'd imagine you could get a scholarship to a decent school. Then take your free degree and get a job that has more reasonable hours.

I think this might be territory where I'm not qualified to give advice, since having kids is a long way off for me. Are you working now, or are you staying at home? Would you mind it if you had two children who had a fairly large age gap?

I do have good numbers, although if I wait long enough to apply, I'll have to take the LSAT again. Ugh. I do think taking a lower-priced education would be a good idea. The only problem is that my husband's job is not completely geographically flexible.

I'm staying at home right now and if I held off on law school, I'd stay home until I went. We want to have one more kid. I wouldn't mind having kids with a large age gap, but I'm wondering if it wouldn't be easier to just get all my childbearing done before I start this new career. On the other hand, if I have another kid, money will be tighter when I go, and also it would be harder to uproot the family if I didn't get in and get money somewhere close to home.

Are you going to be very picky about the name-brand of the school? I don't remember where you live, but with the numbers I think you have you should be able to get significant money at most lower tier 1s and at everything below that. It's probably a little bit of an adjustment from where you think you were going, but getting great grades at a lower-ranked school still opens a lot of doors and it sounds like you're thinking of jobs that aren't so finicky about law school status anyway.

Even if you're not working at a firm, I'd imagine it's easier to have a child before/during school than while you're starting a new job. If you could have two kids on a student budget and still be ok with it, that's probably the least costly option - the other one seems to have you out of the workforce for about 10 years. If it were me I might have the second child and stay at home for another year or two, then go to law school (full-time or part-time). But I think this mostly depends on how long you want to stay at home with your kids, which is kind of a personal preference.

Yeah, you are right. But I admit that the thought of going to a lower tier 1 would be kind of a major psychic adjustment. It probably would be the choice that makes the most sense, though.

I don't adore being a stay at home mom, but I just had no idea how little I would trust him with someone else. Maybe that dissipates a little with time. Honestly I wish he'd been twins because I just want to have the kids and be done with it, but the thought of going through another pregnancy soon is totally exhausting.

Anyway, thanks for letting me think out loud.

If your firm's paying, I'd strongly recommend taking it, even if you just do the CDs. For the most part the class just goes over the books. They do point out what's most important, which has some value, but the main point is to keep you on track and make sure you're studying at the recommended rate.

Do you have slacking tendencies, or are you capable or studying for 6-8 hours a day without structure?

No, she's actually right. Summer events are really fun at the beginning and I wish I could still have some of that, but at the end of my summer I was tired of them. At some point, you get tired of hanging out with your coworkers and want to have some more evenings free to spend with your own friends (or just to stay home and relax). The key is balancing the summer stuff with other things, so you're not having too much of one thing.

I used Douglas Elliman. They seemed to have a lot of listings, and didn't seem too sleazy. They ripped me off, of course, but it was worth it to be able to find an apartment quickly.

Look at some websites so you can have a realistic idea about what you can get for your money. You probably won't be able to have a big, luxurious apartment in the perfect location and not spend too much money for it - decide what your main priorities are beforehand and make sure your broker understands them. Don't be afraid to let the broker know if you think something sucks and don't want to see anything else even vaguely like it. Have everything ready to go before you start going to apartments - deposit money, references, etc. - and be ready to put in an application day of if you like something. The good places go really fast, and if you wait around you might lose it to someone else.
