Melissa Lafsky formerly of Littler Mendelson (if Google is right).

It looks like she passed the bar in Feb 2005. See http://www.nylawyer.com/display.php/file=/exam/names/000May05hl Did she fail the first time?

No bonus for her: "To avoid scandal, I have resigned from my position as a law firm associate. ... I didn't stick around to collect a bonus - the stars simply didn't align to fill my bank account with law firm plunder." Ouch.

Update: Pictures.

I was right, she did fail:

"The night before the bar exam, my entire body was consumed with panicked frenzy (like every other bar examinee in the country). I proceeded to go to bed and throughout the night take anywhere from 15 to 20 pills in staggered intervals, desperate to get some sleep. The next morning found me throwing up bile and pools of dissolved medication, and I barely remember staggering through the test. I subsequently (and unsurprisingly) failed the bar."

Also, her bio and name is nowhere on the firm's web site so clearly she was either fired or resigned within the past 3-4 weeks (since IT personnel usually take a while to update a firm's web site).

She also passed the Feb 2005 NY bar exam, perhaps she failed the July 04 exam? Who knows.

Now I've sold out to work as an associate at a law firm in Manhattan, where my day is reduced to 10-minute billable increments constantly entered into a computer with explanations like 'Colating and auditing sets of documents constituting initial discovery.'"

Whats really interesting is that according to the firm web site and Martindale, there are only 5 associates in the NY office (all of them are female). With "O" there, the total would have been 6. There are about 9 partners.

Just from looking at the web site and the MH listing, it doesnt look like a very collegial environment. That "shareholder" arrangement sounds pretty fishy too (12,000 billable hours to become partner??).

The NALP link is just for Littler's New York City office, who knows how many summers were hired in other offices.

She can now pursue a career as a writer which will probably go nowhere but since she'll end up marrying a biglaw laywer to finance her lifestyle, she should be fine.

I have no excuse for ending up where I am, really, and I have no regrets. I made my choices. I was a paralegal at a massive firm; I saw what it was like. I submitted to the powers of status and parental pressure and I never considered not going to law school.

Any chance she's Nutella?

That girl was a Dartmouth grad, about the right age. There's a reference to Nutella on the blog that made me think of it.

Anyone know where Nutella went to law school?

'My law school requires profs to trace their lineage to the Mayflower to get tenure.'

Translation: lower top 10 government school

'Prestigious Manhattan law firm'

Non-Vault, sub-market TTT no one has heard of

Why does it matter? Does it have any bearing on whether her depiction of biglaw is true? I don't understand why people feel the need to belittle what school she went to or what firm she worked for. Do you think what she was saying was untrue?

Seems like no matter what school you went to, people that go to work for NY firms are going to be working like slaves.

"Why does it matter?"

Yes. She's a self-important bitch and doesn't have the qualifications to back it up. That's fucking annoying.

"Do you think what she was saying was untrue?"

Yes I do. She frequently exagerates and makes things up for the sake of the blog. Read her entry about throwing herself into a shark tank and slitting her wrists because a partner saw her leave early at 8 pm one night.

Finally, who wants to take biglaw advice from a life loser? She did shitty in law school. She likely did shitty at her firm too. Read the posts above where people are speculating that she might have failed the bar (as per martindale passage dates). She's mediocre at best and therefore has a tainted view of biglaw- her failures and fuckups are not universal problems experienced by everyone.

Point taken.

However, some of the things she said probably happen at a lot of firms. It seems like the leaving early thing is universal. I knew someone who called their elevator the shooting gallery because the elevator was made out of glass and when you left everybody would see you. If you left early, you would end up getting more work later.

I don't mean to say that everything she wrote about is wrong, just that she hyped up a lot of things and is generally annoying. The blog makes it almost inevitable that things will get exaggerated and potentially made up.

Plus, in addition to any law school performance issues, it seems clear that she felt some pressure (parental or otherwise) to follow a legal career, and was never satisfied with the decisions and situations that followed. Thus, it's not a terrific surprise that someone who didn't really want to be a lawyer in fact hated being a lawyer.

1. This was indeed a voluntary outing.

>>Yes. She's a self-important bitch and doesn't have the qualifications to back it up. That's fucking annoying. <<

2. So she exaggerated a bit for effect! I don't understand why everyone must bash her, belittle her and now refer to her as "TTT". Obviously she struck a nerve with her blog and obviously we are all still reading.

The fact is, if you don't like her writing - don't read it! Simple as that! In my view, she may think highly of herself but you know what, don't ALL bloggers? Clearly, the point of a blog is to talk about yourself, your opinions, your view of life, etc. If anything, we are the ones in the peanut gallery eager to throw stones. But as a former blogger, I remember coming up with material and describing it eloquently wasn't an easy feat.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

there tends to be massive resentment toward peopl ewho excape from law firms, particularly by writing. i know a guy who sold a screen play for an unusually large amount of money. there was obvious happiness among those he had worked with when the movie didn't do well.

Yes, after reading "174's" posts and those of other bashers on this and other threads, I think they display ignorance and just a general lack of intelligence and awareness of the reality around them.

Its a shame that people get a joy from seeing other people be miserable. I think its great that "Opinionistas" has found her true calling. While parts of her blog were much too exaggerated, she had the guts to go against peer pressure and pursue her first love (writing) and that says more about her independence and desire to succeed than the rest of the biglaw schmucks/hopefuls/miserable law students/lawyers who spend years sitting behind their computers at work posting hateful messages on XOXO and other blogs/message boards... Envy and jealousy are such sad human traits.

the blog is tiresom. it's the standard frenetic/jokey sex in the city style, with the author constantly bemused by being the only fully sane person around. by for all its rebel pretense, it's careful never to have too much bite, which would be more likely to imperil a job, or alienate an editor who has decided it't time to publish some mediocrity and call it "brilliant."

Quite true, I was thinking "Sex and the City" as well. She fits the role, a semi-attractive Jewess who can't cut it in the working world and wants to use her moderately entertaining writing to propel her to bookselling success.

the writing is pretty crisp and engaging. but i think the combination of not really having observed anything interesting, being overly conscious of doing something "marketable," and having a classically female aversion to making any truly sharp observations will doom it to tepid respectability. once people start seeing themself covered in news stories, a sense of self-importance and caution takes over, and they tend to become incapable of saying anything intersting, if they even ever were capable. she exudes the aura of someone who is enchanted by the idea that people are looking at her enviously.

This sums up my feelings about the blog perfectly. Cheers. (Your throwaway comment on the "classically female aversion" isn't entirely fair to that small minority of females who do occasionally make sharp observations or to that larger minority of females who have sharp observations to make but don't make them because other females won't appreciate them and they worry that males might think they're being "bitter.")

In any case, not having worked in private practice, I can't commment on "Opinionistas'" (possible to come up with a more obnoxious little name for oneself than "Wonkette?" Yes, indeed, it is.) take on law-firm life, but all her anecdotes about people and their personal shit (bulimia, child-rearing, the ever-present spectre of sexism blah blah blah) strike me as the kind of thing that would have been a take-or-leave at her prep school literary magazine. Two-dimensional and rife with juvenile indignance.

"classically female aversion"

the male analogue would be roughly its opposite: aggressive, jocular "ribbing." in either case, people who faithfully fulfill their gender's most insipid stereotypes are the bane of society

She's attractive, but like most women, she has an aura about her that seems to indicate that she overestimates her appearance. Then again, that could just be a bad picture of her.

She's a better writer than 50-75% of xoxo posters-- much better than Evan-2001, for example-- but she's not amazing. She could write a nonfiction book and she'd do fine, though sales have very little to do with writing talent, but I think fiction is out of her reach, at least for based on her blog.

I'm really surprised more bloggers don't go the non-fiction route. It's easier to get an agent, you have to put less work upfront to get a contract, and a lot of these guys (like David Lat) are probably far far better at writing about things that are real rather than telling stories.
