like 500 people all chiming in agreeing that he's an ass.
My college had him come to speak last year as a surprise and tickets for our entire arena sold out in just a few days. No marketing; just by word of mouth. We had a line of people from our arena waiting in the cold for over a quarter mile and the police had to block off roads on that side of campus for safety reasons! We had college students chanting the Bill Nye theme song relentlessly until they opened the doors- Bill Nye was our science hero! This was the perfect demographic for him to accept his past and build on it; but oh no, that'd be too logical. After he was introduced, we (of course) start to singing his theme song all in unison - the entire arena was filled with a cacophony of "BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL! BILL NYE THE SCIENCE GUY!" This was out childhood hero! He proceeded to come up to the podium and stare us down without a hint of a smile until the chants subsided... he then explained the serious topics of global warming and evolution and the new discoveries in these fields. It was quite the disappointment. |
