The Brits just have a mode of "eloquence" wherein saying things a certain way, using a more expansive vocabulary, is a natural part of public life. In America, even the smartest ppl --including academics, even people who are extremely eloquent writers -- have it drilled into them that they must be 'plain-spoken' and laconic, folksily unpretentious, etc. It's an American value. So you get literary writers and PhD's on general-audience interview programs, and they speak like bumpkins. It's very unfortunate. |
