I'd rather raise the kid generally agnostic (but generally aware of world religions as a factual matter) until they are teenagers and then expose them gradually to various religions to see if any of the belief systems resonate with them.

I'm not going to raise my kids to be ignorant of religion or to think it's weird for people to go to church or synagogue regularly. I just want them to be mature enough to understand the philosophical issues behind any religion before they decide to subscribe to it, and I don't think that taking a kid to church when they're 7 years old "for the community" is giving them a fair chance to be rational about adopting genuine religious beliefs.

But I learned about Christian mythology primarily via Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals and 70s horror flicks, so what do I know.

My kids are still going to know who Jesus was and the general outlines of Genesis and the New Testament and all the important high notes of Judeo-Christian moral philosophy. I don't need them to quote Corinthians or memorize the Lord's Prayer or whatever, though. And I definitely won't have them do the whole "first communion" thing at the tender age of 8 when they have no idea what's going on.

I'm all down for teaching kids about various world religions as a factual, historical, and cultural matter. And if my kid says to me "I'd like to learn more about X religion", I'll indulge that curiosity as it makes sense to do so. But the kid has to come to me first.

If one of my kids' friends comes from a more religious family and they get exposed to Shabbat dinners or church services through friends, that's perfectly fine. If my kid says "I want to go to church/temple because my friends go to church/temple and it seems like fun," I'll indulge this interest as well.

Most of my church-going friends go to Episcopalian churches that are LGBT welcoming and host nondenominational meditation or yoga classes on Thursday nights and such.

If they WANTED to do mission trips etc as they got older, I'd support it in the spirit of adventure and exploration.

But I would not steer them toward or against any religious belief.

I don't go full blown papist, but traditional and ceremonial liturgy in my denomination puts you in the "I'm at church" mindset. It makes it feel very distinct from everyday life. Special, if you will. Plus, things like the confession of faith (Nicene creed) become a sort of mantra
