As a first name one L seems to be somewhat more common than two Ls. As the last name Phillips, two Ls is apparently more common. A notable exception is the Dutch electronics company Philips. Confusing.

Is there another first name, with a clearly attested historical origin, where a variant with a doubled consonant is the more popular one?

According to Wikipedia the original Greek had one lambda, and was derived from philos hippos, or lover of horses.

The "Phillips" screw was popularized by an American businessman named Phillips in the 30s, though he didn't invent it, it was invented by someone else who sold the rights to him.

As a kid did you call the screwdriver with the flat blade the "flat" one? That's what my pop did. Otherwise it's called "slotted," which doesn't seem very euphonious either.
