I talked to an actual lawyer. He laughed at me. He explained that people who defend the environment do not work in firms, that environmental lawyers in big firms tend to work for the companies, and that if I wanted to work in a firm for big companies that was fine but that I shouldn't narrow it down to one specialty right away. He was right.

No, definitely not. I'm doing corporate transactional law. At some point after that conversation, and for totally unrelated reasons, I realized that I work a lot better with business types than with activist types.

And to be honest, I'm not up for living on a public interest salary - that's one of the reasons why my lawyer acquaintence was laughing at me.

What about a govt sanctioned commision to investigate environment related concerns? Are these just jobs for people who are too unqualified to work at an actual practice? Aren't there any high paying govt (say NOAA or NWS) that would pay to have an in-house?

I still find the comment annoying, though. I think it's a little ridiculous to expect people to stop changing after they hit college. It's not always selling out - a lot of time people rethink their causes, learn more about a field and realize it's not for them (too depressing, too boring), or just realize that stability is more important to them than they thought. I think that's better than refusing to adopt one's ideas in light of experience or new facts, or sticking by something that makes you unhappy because you thought you wanted it when you knew nothing about it.

If that's true, I was overly critical. However, if you don't mind, would you please post your PS?

I'll wager $100 it says either a) you want to protect the environment, or b) you want to help children. Diverging from that stated goal = sell_out.

God, I don't think so. I had already done my research and decided against the environmental stuff by that point, and I never wanted to help kids. I think I wrote about some independent research I did and how it tied into my law school ambitions. I had a really bad PS.

I was always a fairly greedy bitch - hell, I worked full time in undergrad so I could have nice clothes and a big apartment. But on behalf of all the other 20-year-olds, I should say that many people rethink their ideals over the years. I'm definitely less of an environmentalist and far more moderate than I thought I was at 20, and I think that's a good thing. Freezing your ideas isn't admirable as far as I'm concerned.

Having nice clothes and a big apartment is kind of useless when you're butt ugly. Sorry, but that's the truth. You'd be more attractive and happy if you could get beyond your hangups on stuff like that. Because deep down you know that the best any clothing will do for you is make you a 3 instead of a 2.5 (and no, I'm not exageraing those ratings; the only thing you have going for you lookswise is that you are not fat)

I don't think many people rent nice apartments hoping to look more attractive. Some nice things are enjoyable in and of themselves, even by us ugly people. As for adding .5 in looks, that sounds like a nice benefit if all you have to do to achieve it is shop somewhere better than k-mart.

Though I don't know why you felt the need to comment on a 2 year old thread.

Someone else bumped it.

I guess my point was, the time you spent working full time and the money you spent that you earned from that might have made your life happier had you spent the time/money on something other than clothes/rent. And being attractive (or relatively more attractive) brings many rewards, including people treating you better and making new social connections. A good personality and developing talents other than work/material things = a way to be relatively more attractive & sociable.

I can't believe I'm having to explain this to you. Maybe HLS and NYC have blinded you. I can understand that bc I live in a city too, but c'mon Rowan...

But you haven't suggested anything that sounds more appealing. Nor have you explained why looks should be a factor in this sort of decision - why should pretty people have the right to material pleasures but not ugly ones?

You also seem to be assuming that I'm devastated by being ugly, and have no social life as a result, which isn't the case. I'm ok with how I look, my romantic life is fine, and I'm satisfied with my social connections.

That being said, I think you're wrong about making the world a better place leading to happiness. I know some very happy people whose entire lives center around themselves and their families, and also some incredibly miserable activists. A substantial percentage of happiness is based on inate personal characteristics.

yeah i can just picture him sitting esconced in his darienshire estate, sporting an heirloom monacle, stroking his aristocratically-bred jack russel terrier and posting all day on a message board to the effect of: "biglaw chicks are 5s at best, HTFH. i prefer doggie w/a sweet teacher or massage therapist or 'high class escort' any day."

I think BIGLAW women are clustered around a 5 with some higher and some lower. The rest of your post is just gibberish.

I don't need the board to tell me, I know where I stand because I can see my relationship partners and have a good idea of who I could/could not get. I'm not a 10, but I'm between a 7-8 depending on who you'd ask. I'm probably a male version of Blondielaw--have some flaws for sure, but have a lot of positives as well.

Based on her responses, Rowan knows where she stands as far as looks are concerned, too. Why the fuck do you think you need to point out her flaws? Do you think she doesn't have eyes? If she wanted to change her appearance, she would have done it. It really isn't your place to tell her how she needs to change.

You're right. I should've just let the whole thing go. I felt like people were pushing back at me so I should take advantage of the fact Rowan's picture is floating around out there.

She seems nice and well adjusted. I regret doing that a few min ago.

I'm going to also edit it out, lest people see it and decide they should act that way towards Rowan.

Why do you care so much about the appearance of someone you don't know, though? I don't want straight hair or plastic surgery, and I'm fine with what I see in the mirror. I'm also fine with the range of sexual partners and friends available to me. Perhaps you'd be happier if you didn't concern yourself with problems that other people don't want fixed?

You might be right. I probably erred in posting because I was assuming you fell within the range of how most people are. If you're truly happy that is awesome. And you're right I probably should pick up *some* aspects of how you are (not worrying about others)

Perhaps this is the anti-174. Rich in spirit (and perhaps some straightening chemicals and plastic surgery), if not in material possessions.

I have loans to pay off so not worried about material stuff. I havent paid off lawloans yet. Even when I do, I doubt I'll splurge much. My role model is someone more like Joe Pa (you can mock me for that if you want).

Like I said, I don't really care what you do. But being preachy about it is kind of a lame trait. Frugality and charity aren't the only virtues - there's something to be said for things like kindness and tolerance and broad-mindedness.

whatever. i would be a little scared if some gauche unmonacled pleb actually DID approve of my looks, apartment, lifestyle, etc. it would be a signal that my taste level left something to be desired.

I didn't edit, douche. It's a community account.

I just don't particularly care for nice clothes or supernice apartments or "stuff" bc its like putting lipstick on a pig unless you're happy.

I don't work for an NGO or Public Interest... maybe I should stfu and do so. You're right about that part. I guess I was referring to my sense that a lot of ppl waste their money on stupid material stuff.

Different people like different things.

Personally, I think it's easier to be happy if you worry less about what others are doing and concentrate on your own life.

Fair enough. Like I said youre an outlier and thats a good thing--it would be boring if everyone was the same. But by the same token I can't really convince you of anything bc we're so different.

That's certainly true. Your argument is based mostly around the idea that I'd be more pleasing to you and others like you if I changed, and be happier as a result. It doesn't really work unless I'm actually interested joining your social circle.

I do tend to avoid the really annoying BIGLAW slaves who talk about summering on fire island or whatever as if it was a proxy for having class. Oh well.

or do you not object to these places but, rather, to ppl referencing them in an attempt to seem prestigious?

I dont know the difference between those places because I "summer" by taking a normal vacation to normal places that I grew up going to.

I don't "summer" anywhere, but why is someone who grew up going to the Hamptons or Nantucket more condemnable? For them, that is a normal vacation.
