People ask each other about each other all the fing time. It's part of the evaluation process. "How's he working out?" "How was he on that last deal?" I'll just be honest and say "well he kind of disappeared on us." Or "Where was he? Why didn't he do his job?" I'll say, "I don't know where he was."
Yeah, I know what that will do to his career and I don't GAF. He made the choice. But I'll still be nice to him and treat him like a human being.
I'll cover for you if you make mistakes at work. Sometimes I'll take the blame and say I didn't give clear instructions. I'll spend my weekends with you if you need help with concepts and also write you the best review possible as long as you are putting in the effort. I'm extremely lenient about stuff like that. SHIT, if you tell me you're burnt out and you need to take a weekend off to get high and wasted, I'll say "go have fun." But don't ever ghost your team. I personally have a zero tolerance policy for quitting. That's my military background. We don't tolerate quitters. |

Yet we were all expected to be there on time and ready to go with all our gear. A lot of it was bigger BS than some biglaw firedrill (like digging around the grass all night long for that one missing bullet casing from last week out of the hundreds you sent downrange). Or an emergency cleaning exercise to pick up all the trash and sweep all the dust because some General was going to be driving by your area tomorrow.
2) Since you don't really seem to know much about the military, basically if you quit on the team (like failing to report on time or not showing up to formation), you get an ass chewing and maybe some restrictions but that's it. There's nothing an officer can do without making himself look like an incompetent leader so they're basically stuck with a shit soldier who gets bad reviews and maybe passed on promotion but there's only so much you can do. An ass chewing in biglaw these days will be met with an HR complaint or possible lawsuit so you're even more limited in what you can do with a quitter.
If you look at elite units like the Navy SEALs and BUD/S, even those guys can't do much to shitheads other than trying to get them to quit. It's too much of a bureaucratic hassle to kick someone out of BUD/S so they have to try to encourage them to DOR by playing mind games with them.
In my unit we had a bunch of arbitrary rules and guidelines (like shaving at a specific time of day or how many articles we can put into a single laundry load) and the NCOs would try to get the shitheads to rack up enough violations to justify their transfer. But then the receiving units don't want shitheads so the NCOs couldn't write too much of the bad stuff down on paper and had to resort to other passive aggressive means to get people to agree to a transfer while maintaining a good record. Shit like "hey Korea is a really good service station, you'll get a lot of pussy and eat ddokbokgi all the time and get paid more too!" to get them to bite. |
